Do you want to apply your data science skills to real life ground-breaking applications and help drive development decisions for novel medical and security products? The Algorithms and Data Science team’s mission at OML is to unlock the potential of stakeholder data, and working closely within multi-disciplinary teams, use data driven engineering to develop algorithmic models and provide analysis.

The role involves working other data scientists, data engineering, informaticians, biostaticians, chemists, systems and mechanical engineers and program managers, to continuously improve our models and the understanding of their interpretation.

We are looking for a strong Data Scientist with a proven record of accomplishment in data driven decision making. Ideal candidates should be able to identify a business or engineering problem and translate it to a data science problem, dig out sources of data, conduct the analysis and modelling, including solving complex machine learning problems that drive our strategic thinking and product development. They should also be able to work with the PMs and the engineering teams to operationalize the solutions.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Identifies and integrates multiple sources, or types of data, and applies expertise to develop methods to compensate for limitations and extend the applicability of the data.
  • Applies (or develops if necessary) tools and pipelines to efficiently collect, clean, and prepare data for analysis.
  • Transforms formulated problems into experimental plans by applying (and creating when necessary) the appropriate methods, algorithms, and tools, and statistically validating the results against biases and errors.
  • Interprets results and develops insights into formulated problems within the business context and provides guidance on risks and limitations.
  • Presents findings to product and engineering leadership and incorporates feedback on the analyses.
  • Acquires and uses broad knowledge of innovative methods, algorithms, and tools from within OML and from the scientific literature and applies his or her own analysis of scalability and applicability to the formulated problem.
  • Validates, monitors, and drives continuous improvement to methods, and proposes enhancements to data sources that improve usability and results.
  • Works collaboratively with PMs to translate the business needs into metrics and then works with data engineering to implement these metrics including identifying and obtaining the necessary data.
  • Encourage the development of other members of the team by engaging in peer review of work, mentoring of junior members, and establishing best practices within the team.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience in Python, including:
  • Data Analysis and Visualisation libraries (e.g., Numpy, Pandas, Matplotlib, etc)
  • Machine Learning libraries (e.g., Scikit-learn, Keras, Tensorflow, etc)
  • Scripting/programming and pipelining tools.
  • Excellent understanding of different Machine Learning algorithms (e.g CNNs, GLMs, etc), from research to deployment into production (encompassing coding standards and testing).
  • Proficient in database management, using SQL and SQLAlquemy
  • Familiar with Git, CI/CD best practices, and Agile environments.
  • Ability to mentor team members and can drive a culture of excellent code quality.
  • Effective communicator with technical and non-technical colleagues, being able to present to key business partners and wider cross functional teams.

Benefits

Owlstone Medical (www.owlstonemedical.com) is on a mission to save 100,000 lives and $1.5 billion in healthcare costs through the development and application of Breath Biopsy®. This involves collecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and respiratory droplets from breath, which can provide information about metabolic activity and markers related to health and disease.

Breath sampling has substantial advantages for the early detection of disease and to enable precision medicine approaches to patient care. To realize these advantages, Owlstone Medical offers Research Products and Services for biomarker discovery and is developing tests in applications including cancer, liver disease, asthma, and environmental exposure. Our work includes partnerships with major organizations including AstraZeneca, GlaxoSmithKline, the Cleveland Clinic, and the NHS and our platform is in use at well over 100 clinical and academic sites worldwide.

Our leadership in breath is underpinned by our world-class and varied team, including systems engineers, clinical scientists, analytical chemists, artificial intelligence specialists and clinical trials coordinators.

The Owlstone group also commercializes a range of highly innovative products based on its proprietary FAIMS chemical sensing technology in other markets including Scientific, Industrial Process Control, Military and Homeland Defense.

We offer a relaxed, friendly, flexible and international working environment with a strong and vibrant team-spirit. You will be rewarded with a competitive salary package that includes an Employee share options scheme and private medical insurance and your work will have a clear impact on people’s lives.
