The Opportunity: Director, Data Engineering

Currently Reports To: Chief Financial Officer

As Director, Data Engineering at FreshBooks you will work closely with various teams while leading the development of critical data processing infrastructure. As a seasoned leader and manager you'll direct a data engineering team and help accelerate their execution. As a guide in data pipeline development and operation you'll understand that data is a key input for company growth via product innovation and customer acquisition and retention. You'll have the technical experience and skill to navigate your teams through complex and ambiguous environments towards simple and elegant solutions.

You're already a skilled leader, able to recruit new talent, and nurture and develop teams as well as their leaders. Your technical experience with large-scale data technologies allows you to lead by example. Great communication and interpersonal skills allow you to effectively influence across an organization. In all areas you're able to anticipate and plan for the future.

What you'll do:

  • Own and drive the technical vision of FreshBooks corporate data systems by leading teams and working with other groups throughout the company.
  • You will drive project delivery within established timeframes, budget and scope while delivering business value and simultaneously planning for and managing future requirements.
  • Work closely with other key leaders including, but not limited to the VPs, and Directors of Engineering, Sales & Business, and Analytics and others to build an elite data engineering team.
  • You will work across multiple functional and technical groups, educate technical and non-technical stakeholders, effectively manage expectations, facilitate negotiations and help establish department priorities.
  • Lead by example and nurture a group of data engineers and managers.
  • Data Integration – Design and develop new source system integrations from a variety of formats including files, database extracts and APIs.
  • Data Pipelines – Design and develop highly scalable and flexible Data Pipelines that incorporate complex transformations and efficient code. Data will need to flow to and from unstructured and relational systems for analytic processing.
  • Data Platforms – Design and develop solutions for delivering data that meets SLAs, is of high quality and meets data governance requirements.
  • Set, maintain, and raise the level of technical excellence across your group.
  • Attract and recruit talent across the organization to help execute the FreshBooks mission.
  • Prepare and plan for continuous improvement of technology, people, culture, and process.

What you have:

  • A minimum of 10 years progressive technical data engineering experience and leading a team of 10 or more over a period of at least 5 years.
  • Technical expertise in one or more relevant areas, particularly the design, implementation, and maintenance of data pipelines and/or infrastructure.
  • Understanding of real-time data processing
  • Experience with AWS, or another major cloud provider such as Google Cloud Platform
  • Experience with many of Amazon Redshift or Google BigQuery or similar data cloud storage technologies, mySQL or other relational databases, ETL, Python.
  • Understanding of real-time data processing

  • A history of building high performance teams by developing leaders and managers and recruiting outstanding talent.
  • The ability to influence at an organizational level.
  • A demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguity, develop plans, and successfully execute over multiple quarters.
  • A love of learning, a constant drive for self-improvement, and a desire to help everyone be better.

What you may have:

  • Experience working with Scrum or Agile teams.
  • Experience with BI tools: Periscope, Looker
  • Experience with Spark, Kafka, Flink, Gearpump, Dataflow, or other streaming technologies
  • Experience in e-commerce and/or subscription media businesses is a major plus
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field is an asset but not a must have.
