Do you enjoy using your data science skills to gain valuable insights help solve real problems? Do you want to develop your career by leading teams to delivering bespoke data science solutions to new clients?

We are looking for skilled data scientists with experience in consultancy, industry or government, to join our newly formed AI & Analytics Team in our brand new bespoke office based in Leatherhead. If you have strong technical skills and are looking to move into a role with more project leadership and delivery responsibility, within a dynamic team that you could help shape and grow, then this role is for you!

What you will be doing

You will work in our newly formed AI & Analytics team, working closely with the established sister team in Bristol. You will have the opportunity to help shape the team’s skills and client base to align with your ambitions, ensuring you will be undertaking work you value and are passionate about.

As a consultant in the team, you will be expected to lead project teams that deliver bespoke algorithms to our clients. You will be involved in conceiving the data science approach, designing the associated architecture, and for ensuring that best practices are followed throughout. You will directly contribute to the code base of the project with a specific focus on aspects that require specialist experience to implement. You will also play an important role in the development of others by mentoring junior members of the team on projects you lead.

You will be responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, shaping the direction of both current and future projects. You will guide the process of defining the scope of projects, which includes the technical feasibility, delivery approach, resource requirements, costing and client management. It is essential that our consultants build experience in this type of work, to ensure we continue to remain trusted by our clients to deliver high-quality solutions.

You will work on projects that span many industries and capabilities. Some recent projects include:

  • Developing a model to analyse household smart meter data and identify if there is a sustained change of behaviour. The detection model combines machine learning and Bayesian probabilistic techniques to detect feature changes that are indicators of vulnerability. This helps the energy networks to identify customers who are vulnerable and offer additional support, such as particular tariffs or outage support.
  • Optimising wind farm layout to ensure maximise yield whilst minimising maintenance and installation costs.
  • Using a data driven approach to determine how effective Carbon Monoxide information campaigns are to saving lives, especially in communities that are digitally excluded.
  • Developing an AI-driven 3D aircraft carrier model to analyse the interaction between on deck agents (such as personnel), to help optimise the deck layout. We undertook a review into the impact changes in schedule and resource availability would have on the aircraft carrier.
  • Developing the first ever underground low-voltage cable degradation model to determine the probability of failure. This helps the energy networks understand the impact of the electrification of heat and transport on the network, so they can determine what network enhancements are required to ensure a successful transition to net zero.

Requirements

  • Degree in a STEM subject.
  • Mid-level experience in a professional data science position, within consultancy, industry, or government. Able to demonstrate key involvement in the delivery of a data science solution.
  • Strong programming skills as evidenced by earlier work in data science or software engineering. Whilst we are open to many programming languages of choice (e.g. C#, Matlab or R), we will require the ability to become fluent in Python programming in a short timeframe.
  • Experience developing data science solutions in a collaborative manor, preferably utilising the agile software development methodology.
  • A solid grasp of common data science techniques and how to implement them in the associated libraries, used to solve data science problems.
  • A leadership mindset focussed on growing the technical capability of the team. A caring attitude towards the personal and professional development of other data scientists, and an enthusiasm for nurturing a collaborative, enjoyable and dynamic culture.
  • An appreciation of scientific methods applied to the commercial world. Ability to understand a client’s problem and key issues, and develop a solution to suit their need. Ability to develop and implement a project plan, assess the risk and provide delivery schedule.
  • Some commercial experience, particularly if this involved customer-facing work or project management. An eagerness to work alongside clients, business awareness, and an ability to gauge the commercial value of projects.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communications skills. Especially communicating complex concepts to a non-technical audience.
