About Generate Biomedicines

Generate Biomedicines is a new kind of therapeutics company – existing at the intersection of machine learning, biological engineering, and medicine – pioneering Generative Biology™ to create breakthrough medicines where novel therapeutics are computationally generated, instead of being discovered. Generate has built a machine learning-powered biomedicines platform with the potential to generate new drugs across a wide range of biologic modalities. This platform represents a potentially fundamental shift in what is possible in the field of biotherapeutic development.

We pursue this audacious vision because we believe in the unique and revolutionary power of generative biology to radically transform the lives of billions, with an outsized opportunity for patients in need. We are seeking collaborative, relentless problem solvers that share our passion for impact to join us!

Generate was founded in 2018 by Flagship Pioneering and has received over $420 million in funding, providing the resources to rapidly scale the organization. The Company has offices in Somerville and Andover with approximately 250+ employees.

The Role:

We are seeking creative, curious, and resourceful team members who operate at the frontiers of software, data science, and biology. Our G:Labs group is responsible for prototyping new therapies that leverage our ML- based protein and cell design platform, including but not limited to:
CAR-T/TCR-T and other engineered immune cells; multi-specific immune cell engager proteins; and engineered proteins for improved gene therapy.

This role would work across diverse computational areas including variant design and optimization, assay data analysis, NGS library design and analysis, and wetlab-drylab integration. The successful candidate will both work closely within a small and autonomous team, as well as collaborate across other groups to drive our computational efforts. Computationalists with broad interests in software, ML, and biology are encouraged to apply.

A typical day could include designing and analyzing an experiment with wetlab scientists on the team, communicating with other groups across the company, mentoring junior scientists, querying and curating data from our custom LIMS, presenting data analyses, developing novel analytical methods for multiplex libraries, or using Generate’s ML models to design new sets of optimized cell or protein constructs.

Key responsibilities:

  • Create diverse data analysis methods and workflows
  • Develop new computational pipelines integrated with existing machine learning and informatics platforms
  • Proactively provide computational guidance for assay design and high- throughput method development
  • Provide mentorship to fellow computationalists

Qualifications:

  • PhD/9+ years, or equivalent experience in Computational Biology, Bioengineering, Bioinformatics, or a related field
  • Minimum 5 years biotech industry experience
  • Deep understanding of diverse biological systems
  • Expertise developing bioinformatics pipelines and analyzing NGS data
  • Deep understanding of analytical methods, including statistics, for performing large-scale functional and biophysical characterization (both arrayed/clonal and pooled library approaches, e.g. massively parallel reporter assays, sort-seq)
  • Expert proficiency in data analysis using Python
  • Ability to understand and query relational databases with complex data models
  • Experience working with modern deep learning frameworks

Nice to have:

  • Experience leading the implementation of best practices in scientific software development and use
  • Familiarity with structural biology and structure-guided protein engineering
  • Experience building high quality scientific software, especially self- service tools for wetlab biologists
  • Working knowledge of immunology, immuno-oncology, CAR-T, or other
    cell therapies

Flagship Pioneering and our ecosystem companies are committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity or Veteran status.

COVID Safety:

Generate Biomedicines enforces a mandatory vaccination policy for COVID-19. All employees must be fully vaccinated and have received a booster.  The purpose of this policy is to safeguard the health of our employees, their families, and the community at large from infectious disease that may be reduced by vaccinations.  The company will make exceptions to this policy if required by applicable law and will consider requests for an exemption from this policy due to a medical reason, or because of a sincerely held religious belief, or any other exemptions that may be recognized by applicable law.

Recruitment & Staffing Agencies: Flagship Pioneering and its affiliated Flagship Lab companies (collectively, “FSP”) do not accept unsolicited resumes from any source other than candidates. The submission of unsolicited resumes by recruitment or staffing agencies to FSP or its employees is strictly prohibited unless contacted directly by Flagship Pioneering’s internal Talent Acquisition team. Any resume submitted by an agency in the absence of a signed agreement will automatically become the property of FSP, and FSP will not owe any referral or other fees with respect thereto.
