Job Description

The Data Engineering and Analytics Lab (DEAL) is a team of technical actuaries responsible for the design and implementation of our core statistical data-systems including data ingestion, data integration, data transformation, data analysis, and analytic dataset construction. We’re an innovation group that is charged with visualizing the future of our organization’s operations and leveraging our expertise in data, technology, P&C insurance, and process optimization to provide a first-class analytics environment to our data-collection, data-management, actuarial, and data-analytics colleagues.  

The DEAL team is looking to hire an experienced Lead ETL Data Engineer, ideally having a good combination of an analytical/innovative mindset, technical aptitude, business accumen, communication skills, and a passion for mentoring. For internal candidates, this position is open to grade level 17a.  

This is a hybrid role that will combine insurance knowledge and data engineering skills and will be expected to manage a team of Jr actuarial/data engineers supporting multiple work-streams and a wide array of internal customers. We are looking for a team lead that can support the development of our technical business staff in modern data applications including database architectures, efficient data pipelines, effective use of data visualization in organizing workflows, and other data related best-practices. 

About the Day to Day Responsibilities of the Role

  • Design business critical services, code and own what you build architecturally and operationally. 
  • Mentor and assist in the career development of junior engineers. 
  • Assist with recruiting and hiring. 
  • Decompose complex problems into simple, straight-forward solutions. 
  • Partner with technical and non-technical colleagues to understand data and reporting requirements. 
  • Work with engineering teams to collect required data from internal and external systems. 
  • Design table structures and ETL strategy to build performant Data solutions that are reliable and scalable in a fast growing data ecosystem. 
  • Document and publish Metadata and table designs to facilitate data adoption. 
  • Perform ad hoc analysis as necessary. 
  • Perform SQL and ETL tuning as necessary. 
  • Develop Data Quality checks for source and target data sets.  
  • Coach and mentor team members to improve their designs and ETL processes 
  • Create and conduct project/architecture design review 
  • Create POC when necessary to test new approaches 
  • Design and build modern data management solutions 
  • Enforce common data design pattern to increase code maintainability 
  • Conduct peers code review and provide constructive feedback 
  • Partner with team leads to identify, design and implement internal process improvements 
  • Automate manual processes, optimize data delivery, understand when to re-design architecture for greater scalability

Qualifications

About You and How You Can Excel in this Role

  • University degree in Math, Computer Science, or Engineering 
  • 7+ years of relevant Professional experience. 
  • 5+ years’ work experience implementing and reporting on business key performance indicators in data warehousing environments. Strong understanding of data modeling principles including Dimensional modeling, data normalization principles etc. 
  • 4+ years’ experience using analytic SQL, working with traditional relational databases and/or distributed systems such as Greenplum, Redshift, Snowflake. 
  • 3+ Years of experience programming languages (e.g. Python, bash). 
  • Expert level understanding of SQL Engines and able to conduct advanced performance tuning 
  • Familiarity with data exploration / data visualization tools like Tableau, PowerBI, etc. 
  • Ability to think strategically, analyze and interpret market and consumer information. 
  • Strong communication skills – written and verbal presentations. 
  • Excellent conceptual and analytical reasoning competencies. 
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment. A great team player who embraces collaborations also work well individually while supporting multiple projects in parallel 
  • Expereince in the Property & Casualty insuance industr is preferred
