The Greening Youth Foundation's (GYF) mission is to engage under-represented youth and young adults, while connecting them to the outdoors and careers inPosition Description: This position is located in the Maintaining Resilient Dryland Ecosystems program of the USDA Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station, in Albuquerque, NM. Duties include programming dataloggers; digitizing data; writing code to QA/QC data collected by remote sensors; organizing data into integrated databases; developing, documenting and maintaining a library of source code to query, serve up, and dynamically display data on web pages; assisting and working with scientists and technicians with programming equipment, database design, forms design, and the selection and execution of programs; and generally furnishing technical computer science support to the research program.
Duties:
- Provides support to research teams regarding access and discoverability to long-term data, and data associated with short-term projects
- Programs dataloggers to collect data from sensors, send collected data to server, and dynamically serve up and display data to remote computers allowing technicians to view data from the field real-time data already exist, visits long-term research sites and brings back hard copy data records to digitize
- Organizes hard copy or non-digital data into searchable archives. For example, applies barcoding, scanning, and digital photographs of herbarium collections, and organizes these into a searchable database.
- Digitizes data from hard-copy records
- Defines quality assurance-quality control (QA/QC) measures for data
- Writes code to automatically check data for quality assurance-quality control (QA/QC) measures
- Works with scientists and technicians to prepare metadata for all data files
- Submits data and metadata to the FS Research and Development Data Archive site
- Works with FS web managers to link data from FS R&D Data Archive to research site-specific pages
- Works with Experimental Range (ER) scientists to build StoryMaps in GIS and link data to dynamic maps of the ERsWorks as part of an interdisciplinary team of geomorphologists, hydrologists, and fisheries biologists within the Water and Watersheds Program, conducing stand-alone projects and collaborative research with local Forests, sister agencies, university partners, and NGOs.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions. Knowledge of Python and R programming languages is required.
Benefits
$12.50/hr
$1,000/month Housing Stipend
Up to $2,750 available for Forest Service work travel, orientation, trainings, professional development opportunities that align with RA role and goals
Direct Hire Authority Eligibility after completing minimum of 960 hours, DHA status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for Forest Service positions
Option for health insurance coverage during full-term
*This is a 1099 position. Persons paid on a 1099 basis are independent contractors and are self-employed. Independent contractors are required to pay all self-employment taxes (Social Security & Medicare) as well as income tax.
