Job Description
We are looking for a Machine Learning Manager to join our Content Agency team in Amsterdam.
As a Machine Learning Manager you craft direction of product initiatives to generate significant business impact both directly and indirectly. You are responsible for a team of 9 Machine Learning Scientists and Engineers. You will not only work as a technical leader and coach for your people, ensuring that the right technical and strategic decisions are made when building our products.
Content Agency uses Machine Learning to enhance customer experience through relevant, high quality, and safe content. We work across booking.com and for sister companies in the Booking Holdings group. Our three main areas of focus are: Content Intelligence - using multi-modal models to personalize the trip by matching customer intent with relevant content; Machine Translation - translating 400 billion words per year into 40+ languages to enable everyone to experience the world without language barriers; and Moderation - classifying text and images to remove inappropriate content and make booking.com a safe and pleasant place to visit.
As a machine learning manager you will lead three squads of ML Scientists and Engineers across these focus areas. You will mentor and coach the team to help them to deliver the best results using state of the art methodologies, while also developing team members in their careers. In this role you will work closely with Product Managers to shape the team’s ML roadmap. You will need to collaborate with different teams and stakeholders to ensure we deliver the best impact on our customers.
B.Responsible- Build a strong team within your area, by coaching and developing individual contributors
- Prioritise work in collaboration with Product Managers, depending on business needs and keeping stakeholders aligned at all times.
- Translate machine learning vision and strategy into planning and execution, and ensure timely delivery of the team’s plans.
- Develop innovative ML models, algorithms, and engineering approaches or identify existing ones, with the potential to impact our business and potentially the wider scientific community. Design and execute applied research plans to understand, apply, test, evolve, and generalise these technologies into reusable frameworks.
- Translate business problems into viable, reliable and robust ML and AI solutions, accounting for constraints of the production environment.
- Monitor product health, performance and business impact and act accordingly when requirements are not met.
- Identify underlying issues and opportunities across domains and situations that are not obviously related through application of structured thinking and logic.
- Make things happen by maintaining motivation and conveying a sense of urgency, focusing on outcomes and accomplishments, while respecting the need to balance long- and short-term goals, by applying influencing techniques and decision making skills.
- Drive, coach and mentor others through evidence and clear communication, explaining advanced technical concepts in simpler terms.
- Continuously evolve your craft. Keep up to date with industry and academic standard methodologies, periodically explore new technologies, introduce them to the machine learning community and promote your application in areas where you can generate impact.
- Actively contribute to Machine Learning at Booking.com through training, exploration of new technologies, interviewing,onboarding and mentoring colleagues.
- Push for improvements, scaling and extending machine learning tooling and infrastructure, collaborating with central teams.
- Support the team in writing papers and finding the most appropriate conferences for them
- People Development / Coaching / Mentoring experience & skills dealing with various people issues, with strong interpersonal skills.
- Experience designing and executing end-to-end research and development plans and generating impact through large-scale machine learning model development. If possible evidenced by peer-reviewed publication, patents, open sourced code or the like.
- Strong knowledge of areas such as Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, Machine Translation, scaling ML models
- 4+ years of relevant work experience (or equivalent), involved with the application of Machine Learning to business problems, preferably in a commercial environment, preferably with experience mentoring or managing Machine Learning Scientists or Engineers
- Masters degree, PhD or equivalent experience in a quantitative field (e.g. Computer Science, Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence, Physics, etc.).
- Experience on multiple machine learning facets: working with large data sets, model development, statistics, experimentation, data visualization, optimization, software development.
- Experience collaborating cross functionally in the development of machine learning products (e.g. Developers, UX specialists, Product Managers, etc.).
- Experience and deep understanding in one or more of the following DL frameworks: TensorFlow, PyTorch.
- Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal.
