Snapshot

Artificial Intelligence could be one of humanity’s most useful inventions. At DeepMind, we’re a team of scientists, engineers, machine learning experts and more, working together to advance the state of the art in artificial intelligence. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, and collaborate with others on critical challenges, ensuring safety and ethics are the highest priority!

About Us

We’re a dedicated scientific community, committed to “solving intelligence” and ensuring our technology is used for widespread public benefit. We’ve built a supportive and inclusive environment where collaboration is encouraged and learning is shared freely. We don’t set limits based on what others think is possible or impossible. We drive ourselves and inspire each other to push boundaries and achieve ambitious goals.

We constantly iterate on our workplace experience with the goal of ensuring it encourages a balanced life. From excellent office facilities through to extensive manager support, we strive to support our people and their needs as effectively as possible.

Our list of benefits is extensive, and we’re happy to discuss this further throughout the interview process!

The role

With a particular focus on equity, this role will help DeepMind develop insights, frameworks and tools to help both us and the broader AI community create AI that represents the diversity and concerns of people in our world.

While many of these insights, frameworks and tools might be tested and used internally first, we expect to also develop and share them externally, in collaboration with key partners, to help advance the AI community as a whole. Bringing in external perspectives from the very beginning will therefore be integral to this effort.

This role is 30% strategic thinking and 70% nuts-and-bolts operational execution, with the opportunity to work on some most urgent and compelling questions in AI today.

Key responsibilities:

  • Build the case for DeepMind and key external partners to invest in new joint products and projects around equity…and then support, fund and/or lead those products and projects. This includes spotting high-leverage opportunities to improve equity in AI, determining how to engage (fund, partner, build), gathering requirements from external and internal stakeholders, developing and building support for a solution, drafting PRDs, managing partnering, and orchestrating development and internal trials as needed.
  • Identify and build relationships with Google, Alphabet and external partners, from academia, industry, governments and communities–especially those which have historically been marginalised
  • This role’s initial objective will be to investigate what proof points internal partners and key external constituencies need in order to source, validate and have confidence in representative datasets, then help design and deliver solutions. Resourcing for developing these solutions could take many different forms–including everything from partnering with existing internal DeepMind teams and projects, recruiting internal volunteers, hiring and managing contractors, and giving grants to not-for-profit organisations—so creativity and flexibility is key.

About you

In order to set you up for success at DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:

  • MS (or equivalent experience) in a relevant field. Relevant is broadly defined–the field could be technical or in the realm of public policy, ethics, sociology or the like.
  • Experience with the complex ways of viewing the social equity impact of artificial intelligence.
  • Experience creating and executing complex technical project plans, while managing a broad group of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity and resilience, including the ability to incorporate multiple–even polarised–points of view into outputs while holding a strong perspective.
  • Demonstrated quantitative, critical thinking and communication skills, with the ability to disaggregate complex problems so they become manageable
  • Demonstrated understanding of the advantages and pitfalls that can arise when developing AI (for example, lack of representative data sets).
  • Practical experience using and interrogating data in this way, such as in policy making, quantitative social science research, large-scale product management, or data science, is a plus.
  • Previous experience in product management is strongly preferred

In addition, the following would be an advantage:

  • Demonstrated experience in understanding and representing the views of marginalized communities in complex social and/or policy processes
  • Experience conducting, supporting and/or using high-quality academic, corporate or non-profit/NGO original research in product decisions
