Job Description

Precise positioning is integral to enable autonomous driving, improve road safety and road efficiency. In general, satellite-based positioning systems like GNSS are the backbone in outdoor scenarios. Nevertheless, especially in urban environments, street canyons and other obstructions can limit the positioning accuracy. In addition, modern communications systems like 5G/6G, UWB, WiFi add positioning services on top the communication stack. This recent development towards joint communication and ranging is revolutionizing the toolbox of positioning techniques. However, many challenges need to be tackled still. One challenge are so-called distributed antenna systems where antennas are spatially distributed for example in a car. To enable Angle-of-Arrival or Time-of-flight approaches, tight synchronization requirements have to be met. Furthermore, advanced algorithmic approaches are required to achieve high positioning accuracy. In this thesis, the aim is to investigate the impact of a distributed antenna system and mobility on the positioning accuracy in UWB-based positioning. Based on the findings an algorithmic approach to achieve precise positioning shall be derived, possibly leveraging machine-learning based approaches:

  • In this thesis, you will be setting up a UWB localization system for automotive use cases.
  • You will perform measurements to collect data for data-driven approaches.
  • Last but not least you will be implementing new machine-learning algorithms for TDoA and AoA in distributed antenna systems.

Qualifications

  • Education: Master studies in the field of Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Physics or Mathematics with an excellent Bachelor degree
  • Personality and Working Practice: self-motivated, enjoy working in a team, high level of commitment and initiative as well as a competent and obliging appearance
  • Experience and Know-how: preferably Matlab, Python, Tensorflow and PyTorch knowledge
  • Enthusiasm: willingness to perform measurements and setup a real-world testing environment, structured software development
  • Languages: fluent in English, German is a plus
