We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join our Data and Machine Learning Platforms team. At Wayfair, this team is enabling the next generation of capabilities powered by ML and Analytics. We work with Data Scientists, Analysts and Engineers to bring to life data and ML-driven products, develop and deliver a range of platforms to improve the experiences of our customers and suppliers and help enable other teams within the company. Every day, we enable production and ingestion of billions of data events and improve how our customers pick out the perfect items for their homes, and data that drives our business strategies and decisions. 

We are looking for a seasoned engineer to help drive our architecture and the overarching data ecosystem that cater to a range of Analytics and Machine Learning initiatives. This is the role for you if not only enjoy developing high quality and business value focused software, but also love solving complex and multi-faceted engineering challenges, are bold to invest in early stage ideas and can follow through with execution to take them to fruition on a global scale and do so while upskilling the engineers around you and leading by example.

What You Will Do:

In this position, as a hands-on leader, you will drive changes through a mix of: 

  • Establishing the overarching architecture and best practices for our data and ML use cases, implement robust, well-tested services and provide technical design and code reviews for peers within their team and across the broader org
  • Spearhead engineering efforts across multiple platforms and data engineering efforts
  • Lead in setting appropriate data standards, governance and domain-driven data ecosystem, observability of the data pipelines, and implementation design patterns guiding data product teams as they mature their solutions, create efficiencies for the users and do so in a cost efficient and cloud native manner
  • Promote a culture of engineering excellence, up-leveling the technical expertise of engineers across the org
  • Providing insights into opportunity areas for the platform, influencing priorities and team roadmaps in close partnership with Engineering and Product leadership and working with Wayfair’s engineering leadership to develop a robust engineering strategy and architecture to drive velocity for our data and ML teams
  • Provide technical guidance for a team of 40/direct and 100-150/indirect software and data engineers and help shape the future roadmap for software platforms
  • Architect and implement robust, well-tested services. Provide technical design and code reviews for peers within your team and across org
  • Identify and implement new tools, technologies, and processes to accelerate developer velocity within our teams
  • Contribute to the technical development of engineers by mentoring and coaching them through learning opportunities

What You’ll Need

  • Broad experience architecting and implementing robust, scalable, distributed data systems and data/event-based business systems (10+ years or equivalent track-record)
  • Track-record of bringing new technical innovations to production environments
  • Track-record of being a hands-on developer efficiently building high quality, scalable and sound data engineering solutions
  • Superior organizational and analytical skills with hypothesis- driven problem solving and turning data into actionable insights
  • Excellent communication skills with demonstrated experience driving teams forward and ability to influence decisions 
  • Experience with public cloud reference architectures and services, such as Google Cloud Platform or AWS
  • Experience with Kubernetes containerization, Java, Presto, Dataflow, DBT, Airflow, Spark, and microservices preferred

Wayfair has a number of Technology Development Centers and we would like this candidate to be based in our Toronto, Ontario location.  Secondary preference is for Austin, TX or Boston, MA, followed by a remote hire with some amount of regular travel.

The salary range for this position is $228,000 - $240,000 however, base pay offered may vary depending on location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
