Job Description
What’s the role?
Etsy is an international marketplace with 65M+ handmade and vintage items from hard-working artists, designers and vintage collectors. Our Data Science & Machine Learning (DSML) organization’s objective is to help our 60M+ buyers find remarkable goods, and our 2M+ entrepreneurs better run their businesses and keep the Etsy community a safe and trusted marketplace.
Etsy is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join the Risk Engineering organization. This ML engineer will build scalable ML technologies to prevent risk and fraud.
We are looking for individuals who are product driven and passionate about applying ML to deliver customer impact. Our work solves pressing, real-world problems, including detection of transactional fraud, fake account creation, collusion fraud, and more. As a member of the product team, this role is an excellent opportunity to collaborate with ML professionals on large-scale projects protecting millions of users.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Applied ML Engineering Manager and the base salary range will be $184,000 USD - $216,000 USD per year. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy! For this role, we are considering candidates based in the US who are either remote, flex, or office-based. Etsy offers different work modes to meet the variety of needs and preferences of our team. What’s this team like at Etsy?
- The Risk Decisioning team works on customer and business problems (e.g. protecting against seller fraud, transactional fraud, account takeover, fake accounts) using machine learning techniques (e.g. deep neural networks, graph ML, unsupervised and semi-supervised anomaly detection)
- We take ideas and scale them to users. We develop and implement end-to-end plans, including idea generation, project planning, model development, production model serving, and ownership of model performance.
- We architect new or improved existing ML systems, including building data architectures enabling faster and more robust model development, and improving model serving and orchestration.
What does the day-to-day look like?
- Prototype, optimize, and deploy large-scale ML models that help deliver results
- Develop production code for data pipelining, ML infrastructure management, and integrating ML services with broader Etsy systems
- Conduct A/B experiments to validate the ML model efficiency models and pipelines
- Push the state of the art and apply the latest advances in deep learning and other ML techniques to improve trust and safety on Etsy
- Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.
Qualifications
Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:
- A graduate degree (M.S./Ph.D.) in similar fields (e.g., computer science, industrial engineering, applied math, statistics) and 3+ years of experience in ML infrastructure; or an undergraduate degree in related fields and 5+ years of experience in ML infrastructure.
- Experience deploying, debugging, and fine-tuning machine learning models in large-scale production systems in public clouds (e.g., GCP, AWS, or Azure), with experience in Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform).
- Previous software development skills. You are familiar with git, Linux environments, dockers, and other tools for writing robust, production-ready code.
