What you will do

Are you interested in a role and company which allows you to conduct research to solve a real world humanitarian problem and work on something meaningful which will improve the lives of thousands (potentially millions) of people? If so, this may be the role for you!

You will be helping us kickstart a brand new product for accelerating repairs on homes damaged by natural disasters. This is a very exciting role as it's truly greenfield meaning full scope and autonomy to come in and build something from the ground up. The aim of the new product will be to help homeowners perform a damage inspection of their property using just their smartphones powered by Tractable’s AI, which will be able to figure out the different categories of damage & remove the need for manual inspections by an expert. In some parts of the world it can take over a year for families to receive money from their insurance company after a natural disaster has hit their home. Our product will bring that down to just a handful of days helping families and people globally to recover faster and restore their lives and livelihoods. The research you will conduct will be deployed to the real world and inspire confidence and a sense of security to our users.

You will:

  • Work with colleagues and domain experts to understand and decompose complex visual decision-making tasks into a set of tractable problems
  • Solve this set of problems with machine learning or code and knitting the solutions together to form a system of AI models that surpasses human level performance
  • Critically evaluate the performance of this system, by comparing it to human experts, to identify any risks posed by the model and ideas for mitigating these risks
  • Apply and synthesise the latest developments in the lab and across the research team to build up world-class AI technology and tooling
  • Disrupt a notoriously closed-minded industry to create a step change in customer experience
  • Get creative to produce MVPs and quickly iterating on those until we have an awesome product that delivers a huge impact to our end-users

What you need to be successful

  • Someone who has a proven track-record of solving complex real-world problems with machine learning and computer vision
  • You are equally adept at working within a team or autonomously on projects. You’re someone who actively looks to improve the team by sharing resources, knowledge or code. You enjoy seeing your teammates succeed.
  • Someone who applies a build-measure-learn approach to software and model development, with solid hands-on experience implementing and iterating on ML solutions to tough applied research problems
  • A strong product mindset - you’re always thinking about how your product can improve, and how you can mitigate risks at each point in the development cycle
  • You are capable of producing production-quality Python code and comfortable with software development tools such as version control, formatters and testing.
  • Strong self-drive, you take ownership of your projects and have demonstrable experience of having made an impact quickly in previous roles.
  • Extensive experience using ML/DL libraries (numpy, pandas, scikit-learn and tensorflow/pytorch)
  • Strong problem solving skills and mathematics background (probability and statistics)
  • You are capable of presenting your results to a range of audiences, from fellow researchers, to people with little or no experience in computer vision or machine learning

What’s in it for you

  • Twice a year compensation reviews
  • Generous equity package
  • 25 days paid annual leave + bank holidays
  • 5% employer match on pension
  • Full private health coverage through Bupa
