Octopus Energy entered the Italian market in November 2021 with the acquisition of the energy retailer SATO Luce e Gas, which is now rebranding as Octopus Energy Italia and is on a mission to bring cheaper, green power to customers across the country and shake up the market. Octopus Energy Italy is targeting 1 million Italian energy accounts by 2025 (5% of the market) and is now in a start-up phase which means that you will be able to shape the future of energy in Italy from day one.

We’re looking for a data analyst to join our Italian business to work on energy cost modelling and gross margin calculations. This role will focus on two areas: forecasting energy costs and calculating the gross margin of our supply business. These two activities are at the core of our energy supply operation and inform pricing, planning, financial reporting and operational efficiency. 
This role will require you to combine an in-depth understanding of the Italian energy business with expertise using a modern set of data tools (Python, SQL, dbt, Spark). We’re looking for someone with at least one of these capabilities and who is eager to learn the other.
You’ll work closely with the trading, data, finance and strategy teams and will be supported by cost and gross margin analysts in the UK. This is a great opportunity to be a key part of a young energy business focussed on Net Zero that is transforming how Italians buy energy.


What you'll do

  • Build and maintain a database of energy costs including (commodity, transmission, distribution, government schemes, metering costs)
  • Build forecasts of uncertain energy costs
  • Build and maintain a cost model in Python that combines and applies costs to customer usage profiles
  • Keep track of regulatory changes that may affect energy costs 
  • Build and maintain gross margin data pipelines that calculate cost, revenue and margin at a customer level
  • Provide monthly reports of gross margin to the finance and strategy teams
  • Reconcile industry invoices against the gross margin output

What you'll need

  • A passion for working in energy and contributing to the energy transition
  • An understanding of the industry cost structures and settlement and charging methodologies (or is motivated to learn these)
  • A scripting language (ideally Python) 
  • Experience with relational databases (ideally Postgres)
  • The ability to wrangle data outside of a spreadsheet environment (ideally using the Python data toolkit - pandas, numpy, Jupyter)
  • Building data models in dbt (not essential but desirable)
  • Experience in a collaborative cloud based development environment (AWS, Github)
  • To be curious and self driven - when faced with a new problem is capable of seeking out an answer without lots of help and support
  • An interest in building robust and useable tools

  • Databricks Delta Lake for data lake and warehouse storage and querying
  • Spark for large data processing
  • dbt for data modelling and transformations
  • Python data ecosystem as main scripting and analytics language
  • Jupyter and Jupyter Hub for notebook analytics and collaboration
  • Airflow for task scheduling
  • Kubernetes for orchestration 
  • Github, Circle CI, Grafana and Prometheus for version control, deployment and monitoring
  • Tableau and Streamlit as data front ends
