We are looking for a Data Scientist to join our growing Technology & Data team, you will make a significant contribution to success of the organisation, by using data to identify opportunities to improve how we are enrolling and engaging volunteers. The Data Scientist will support the development and use of automated reporting systems and self-service data platforms, while collaborating on deeper data science projects.

Our Future Health will be the UK’s largest ever health research programme, bringing people together to develop new ways to detect, prevent and treat diseases. We are a charity, supported by the UK Government, in partnership with charities and industry. We work closely with the NHS and with public authorities across all nations and regions of the UK.

Our plan is to bring together 5 million volunteers from right across the UK who will be asked to contribute information to help build one of the most detailed pictures we have ever had of people’s health. Researchers will be able to use this information to make new discoveries about human health and diseases. So future generations can live in good health for longer.

What you’ll be doing

In this role, your key responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Engage with internal operational and scientific teams on specific problems to understand requirements for analysis in detail.
  • Understand existing sources of information that could be bought to bear on the problem, including analysis that has already been conducted internally and insights from other studies.
  • Conduct analysis to a high standard having first selected appropriate statistical methods.
  • Communicate findings in a clear way through a combination of tabular, visual and narrative means, to internal stakeholders and to a standard that can be shared externally as needed.
  • Identify opportunities to automate the production of analysis, building on existing pipelines where appropriate, and ensuring code is reusable.
  • Provide advice to scientific and operational teams about the availability, provenance and properties of data, and how it can be used and interpreted.
  • Stay knowledgeable about the data being collected and processed in a small number of high priority digital systems across the organisation.

Requirements

To succeed, you will have some of the following skills and experience:

  • Experience with working with a variety of operational data sets ideally in a health context.
  • A thorough understanding of statistical principles and a track record of learning and applying a range of quantitative methods.
  • Ability to communicate insights to operational, scientific, and clinical audiences while making clear the limitations of the data and analysis.
  • Familiarity with a range of statistical languages and environments such as python, R Studio, business intelligence tools such as PowerBI and Tableau, and PostgreSQL.
  • Understanding and working knowledge of information governance and data security approaches appropriate for sensitive health data, ideally with experience of working within an ISO 27001 accredited environment.
  • Experience working collaboratively with people from a variety of disciplines including data engineers and software engineers, using source control.
