OVERVIEW:

The Research and Modeling group at Verisk Extreme Event Solutions is looking for a highly motivated and detail-oriented research engineer to join our team. The research engineer position will be responsible for developing, enhancing and managing the vulnerability component and overall model performance of Verisk Extreme Event Solutions’ atmospheric peril vulnerability models that cover multiple regions and perils, including hurricane, straight-line tornadic winds, storm surge as well as precipitation-driven flooding. The candidate will work closely with a team of structural engineers, meteorologists, statisticians, hydrologists/hydraulic engineers, and specialists in financial application of probabilistic risk assessment.

We are seeking candidates with a desire to use their problem-solving skills in applying sound engineering principles to solve unique and challenging problems in the fields of civil/structural engineering, risk assessment and many interconnected scientific disciplines. It is expected that the candidate will be well-organized, able to perform high-quality self-directed research, have outstanding written and verbal communication skills, and be an effective team player.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Understand key features of any interested region’s (worldwide) building inventory and its impact on vulnerability subjected to atmospheric hazards

· Investigate the impact of building codes’ design and construction specifications on building’s and their components’ vulnerability for countries worldwide (in Europe, Latin America etc.)

· Development of vulnerability functions and monetary loss curves for structural and non-structural building and infrastructure components subjected to hazards such as hurricane winds, hail, tornadoes, storm surge, precipitation induced flooding for the regions of interest.

· Collect, analyze and efficiently manage a wide variety of data (such as building characteristics, damage and loss data) used in the development and validation of catastrophe models.

· Implement the research of building vulnerability into Verisk Extreme Event Solutions’ portfolio risk assessment models, and validate the output

· Investigate property damage in the aftermath of flooding, including statistical analysis of historical damage and insurance claims data

· Provide technical support regarding model development and communicate results internally and externally to staff and clients.

Qualifications

· Ph.D. in Wind Engineering, Structural Engineering, Building Science, Civil Engineering, and/or other relevant fields

· Deep understanding of and/or ability to research international building codes and standards across various countries

· Experience in probabilistic and stochastic risk assessment and modeling, particularly in the field of structural engineering

· Proficient in C/C++, Python, R, SQL, MATLAB

· Knowledge of data mining skills and/or statistical analysis tools

· Excellent communication skills to convey findings to internal and external stakeholders

· Knowledge of GIS applications is a plus

· Insurance industry experience is a plus
