Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) has an exciting and challenging opportunity for a Junior Modeling and Simulation Engineer/Scientist who will support our growing business in data and theory-driven modeling, simulation, and analysis. As a member of our diverse, multidisciplinary team, you will support the development of computational models, simulations, and analysis tools that strengthen our national security. The successful candidate will have a degree in engineering, mathematics, physics, or a related field and a strong interest in modeling, simulation, scientific analysis, and/or software development.

The systems modeling, analysis, and research technology (SMART) group develops modeling and simulation software and other tools to support analysis of military systems, including weapons systems, communications systems, medical care systems, and other systems that support national defense. We develop models and conduct simulations over a broad range of spatial and temporal scales using a variety of approaches to support customer objectives. As a member of the team, you will apply your knowledge and skills daily to develop creative solutions to challenging problems.

We are a research team, and the application and nature of our work can vary. You will be continuously challenged to learn and grow expertise in new areas. The most successful candidate will have a strong technical background in Science, Engineering, Applied Physics, or Mathematics and a desire to continue expanding their knowledge. Experience (and desire!) in writing robust and performant software is also highly desirable. If this describes you, please apply!

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Applying Math/Statistics/Physics/Engineering concepts to solve multi-disciplinary problems.
  • Review literature and report findings to support collaborative solution development.
  • Present candidate solutions to colleagues and adjust designs based on feedback.
  • Contribute to the development of technical reports and other modes of communicating technical work.
  • Occasionally work and learn independently to support technical objectives.

 Position Requirements:

You are a qualified candidate if you have the following.

  • A BS or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field with 0-2 years of experience.
  • US Citizenship Required.
  • A strong interest in solving complex challenges.
  • Experience programming with Python.
  • Experience in one or more of the following: Optimization, reinforcement learning, large-language models, physics modeling, image analysis, and/or machine learning platforms (e.g., Hugging Face).

 Position Preferred Qualifications:

Above all, we value passion, a continuous desire to learn, and teamwork. We are confident that if you possess the right attitude, work ethic, and skill set, you will succeed in the role. In addition to the experience and skills above, if you have any of the following, you will be able to accelerate your effectiveness and impact.

  • A graduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics.
  • A desire to work in a dynamic team environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written mediums with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Familiarity with supervised learning; linear, gradient-boosted, and non-linear models.
  • Familiarity with self-supervised learning: large-language, large-vision, and foundational models.
  • Familiarity with knowledge graphs.
  • Familiarity with systems science, systems theory, and/or modeling and simulation theory.
  • Familiarity with software architecture, algorithms, data structures, design patterns, API design, and/or test-driven development.
