The Boeing Company is seeking a Systems Engineer with expertise in data analytics and airplane performance to join the Flight Efficiency Solutions (FES) team within the Boeing Global Services (BGS) Engineering team in Seattle, WA. The FES team focuses on developing Flight Efficiency and Sustainability products as part of the Digital Aviation Solutions portfolio. In this role, the engineer will be responsible for developing tail-specific performance models for FliteDeck Advisor (FDA), which is a flight optimization application. FDA provides real-time, tail-specific in-flight advisories to pilots, aiming to enhance flight profiles, reduce fuel consumption, optimize flight schedules, and generate cost savings for airlines. Moreover, the application also contributes to lowering carbon emissions and supporting sustainability objectives.
The candidate will utilize their expertise to apply advanced mathematical principles, aerodynamics, flight dynamics, and flight operations knowledge. Their responsibilities include developing optimization models and algorithms and will play a crucial role in contributing to the design and development of innovative solutions in the field of optimization and sustainability. Collaboration with customers and cross-functional teams will be essential in defining requirements, creating solutions, and delivering high-quality products. The ideal candidate will have prior experience in developing analytics and optimization solutions for airline operations, specifically flight deck operations and flight crew management. It would be advantageous for the candidate to have previous experience in customer support and technical product management of airplane performance tools. Familiarity with commercial, business, and military airplane performance regulations would be a plus. Ability to assess customer needs, define roadmaps, support product implementation and define analytics to measure success. Have excellent problem-solving and analytical skills and have strong communication and teamwork abilities. Overall, having a growth mindset and a passion for aviation is highly desirable.
Position Responsibilities:
Applies an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to lead activities to plan, design, develop and verify complex lifecycle balanced system of systems and system solutions
Develop and optimize tail-specific airplane performance models and algorithms
Utilize analytics and machine learning techniques to analyze and optimize aircraft performance
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve aircraft performance and efficiency
Research and recommend new system requirements to improve the product capabilities
Provides technical solutions to complex problems that require ingenuity and creativity
Conduct research and stay updated on industry trends, competition offerings and advancements in aircraft performance and sustainability
Support the team from different time zones, ensuring seamless communication and collaboration
Support development of Design Practices
This position is hybrid. This means that the selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options. This is at the hiring team’s discretion and could potentially change in the future.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science
5+ years of experience with data analysis algorithms (e.g. data mining, statistics, machine learning, natural language processing, text mining, visual analytics) and building Descriptive, Predictive and Prescriptive models?
Knowledge of Aerodynamics, Airplane performance, or Flight Operations
Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, MATLAB
Experience with regulatory, certifications, or standards within Aviation
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
Senior (Level 4): 10+ years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience with Flight Data Monitoring and Flight Data Analytics
Experience in Deep Learning and Neural Network models
Knowledge of regulatory requirements and standards related to aircraft performance.
Knowledge of flight management systems and aircraft trajectory
Knowledge of algorithm development / integration
Experience working with airline customers
Experience developing technical roadmap and requirements
Experience working with cross-functional teams spread across multiple products
Familiarity with airplane avionics, network protocols and airplane system integration.
Familiarity with cloud technologies and EFB/Flight Deck applications.
Creative thinking beyond the boundaries of existing industry practices and client mindset
Typical Education & Experience:
Mid-level (Level 3):
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
Senior (Level 4):
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
