Sr. Director, Data Science

This is a remote position, however, the candidate must reside within 30 miles of one of the following locations: Portland ME, Boston MA, Washington DC, Dallas TX and San Jose CA.

What you'll do:

• Lead and inspire: Build and lead a high-performing team of AI architects and data scientists. Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning.

• Develop and execute AI strategy: Partner with AI leaders from tech and digital organizations to define and implement a comprehensive AI strategy aligned with WEX's strategic goals. Identify and prioritize high-impact AI initiatives, ensuring alignment with business objectives.

• Build AI Solutions: Lead a team of data scientists working with machine learning engineers to build AI solutions. These solutions leverage traditional machine learning models as well as modern Generative AI and LLMs based models. These solutions will be both internal employee facing as well as external customer facing. 

• Hands-On Oversight: Actively contribute to the design, development, evaluation, and implementation of AI solutions, especially in the early stages of team formation.

• Drive AI innovation: Lead the development and deployment of cutting-edge AI models and algorithms to solve real-world business problems. Stay abreast of the latest AI research and trends to ensure WEX remains at the forefront of AI innovation.

• Build partnerships: Collaborate with senior stakeholders across WEX to identify and address AI opportunities. Build strong relationships with external partners, academic institutions, and the broader AI community.

• Champion AI adoption: Foster a culture of AI adoption across WEX. Educate and empower teams to leverage AI tools and techniques to drive business value. Collaborate with AI leaders and the AI community of practice 

• Measure and communicate impact: Establish clear metrics to measure the impact of AI initiatives. Communicate results and insights to senior leadership and stakeholders.

• Visionary Leadership: Inspire and motivate the AI team with a compelling vision for the future of AI at WEX.

• Technical Expertise: Deep understanding of AI principles, techniques, and tools. Ability to translate complex AI concepts into actionable business solutions.

• Strategic Thinking: Ability to identify and prioritize high-impact AI opportunities. Develop and execute a long-term AI roadmap.

• Collaboration: Build strong relationships with cross-functional teams and external partners. Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

• Communication: Effectively communicate AI concepts and results to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Experience you'll bring:

• Advanced degree (PhD or MS) in Computer Science, AI, Machine Learning, or a related field.

• 15+ years of experience with 10+ years of experience in AI research, development, or deployment.

• 10+ years of experience leading and managing AI teams.

• Proven track record of delivering impactful AI solutions to real-world business problems.

• Experience with a wide range of AI techniques, including machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, and computer vision.

• Strong programming skills in Python, R, or other relevant languages.

• Practice experience in using AI tools such as Dataiku, Sagemaker, as well as using large language models (LLMs) such as chatgpt, llama 2. 

What would make you stand out:

• Experience in the fintech or payments industry.

• Experience with cloud-based AI platforms (e.g., AWS SageMaker, Google Cloud AI Platform).

• Publications in top-tier AI conferences or journals.

• Experience with AI ethics and responsible AI practices.

The base pay range represents the anticipated low and high end of the pay range for this position. Actual pay rates will vary and will be based on various factors, such as your qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. Base pay is one component of WEX's total compensation package. Most sales positions are eligible for commission under the terms of an applicable plan. Non-sales roles are typically eligible for a quarterly or annual bonus based on their role and applicable plan. Pay Range: $210,000.00 - $280,000.00
