ABOUT THE ROLE

You will be part of a team that articulates the AV risk profile, using quantitative and qualitative risk assessment methods. To achieve this we are looking for an expert to help us execute high quality risk assessments by triaging and understanding Cruise Autonomous Vehicle performance. In this position, you will work closely with engineers, product managers and data scientists to define failure modes and determine failure rates by using real and simulation data, while owning and leading a scalable and automated process to continuously monitor these safety indicators.

If you’re interested in having a major impact on accelerating failure diagnosis and AV behavior risk estimation through creative detective work, let’s chat!

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

  • Evaluate performance of safety-critical autonomy systems and functions using quantitative and qualitative methods and articulate data-driven safety risk scores/levels.
  • Rapid triage of requests, events and escalated issues
  • Articulate reports, summaries and recommendations, and presenting these to risk owners
  • Improve team impact and efficiency by working with dependencies such as data science, offshore labeling and systems engineering.
  • Become a domain expert and team representative for certain AV components, maintaining knowledge of component limitations, diagnostic techniques, mitigation strategies and performance expectations, etc.
  • Maintain an understanding of the Autonomous Vehicle (AV) software stack by working closely with engineering stakeholders
  • Define and maintain scalable processes to identify, monitor and mitigate safety risk
  • Use in-house tools to triage and diagnose events occurring during on-road AV testing
  • Collaborate with leadership from engineering, legal, safety, operations, product, data science, etc. on a consistent basis

WHAT YOU MUST HAVE

  • Consistent track record of root cause analysis in sophisticated software/hardware systems
  • Deep expertise in at least one component of the AV autonomy stack
  • You have strong critical thinking skills - you can interpret what the data is telling us, and which analyses will reveal impactful conclusions
  •  Strong cross functional communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to learn quickly, starting with little information and quickly becoming an expert in your domain
  • Excellent at communicating data-driven decisions to leadership
  • Strong project management skills to coordinate multiple risk assessment work streams simultaneously
  • Bachelors or Masters in Engineering or related discipline; or equivalent combination education and experience

BONUS POINTS!

  • You have experience working with large datasets, SQL and Python or C++
  • Experience with statistical methods for risk estimation
  • Experience with developing data-driven metrics
  • Experience with GitHub and Jira or equivalent tools
