Amazon’s Personalization team is looking for a Principal Applied Scientist to lead step function science improvements across the recommendations space. As a Principal Applied Scientist on the team you will work on the core website optimization systems for all of Amazon and set the science vision and direction while working backwards from customer problems. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team, working on one of the largest scale machine learning systems in the company. You will use your skills in areas such as deep learning, multi-armed bandits, and reinforcement learning while building scalable industrial systems. As a member of a highly leveraged team of talented engineers and ML scientists, you will have a unique opportunity to help determine what content gets shown to every customer on Amazon.

You will identify new areas of exploration in the recommendations and content optimization space, continuously pushing the bar for what’s possible. You will mentor other applied scientists and deliver innovative and scalable state of the art solutions, with opportunities to publish your work. You will play a critical role in ideation for the team. We are building the next generation optimization system that helps make Amazon more intent aware and we hope you will join us!

Basic Qualifications


· Ph.D. in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, related field, or equivalent experience.
· 10+ years of experience in applied science and software development at large scale.
· Experience building complex software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers.
· Extensive experience building predictive and optimization models.
· Expert knowledge and practical experience in several of the following areas: machine learning, statistics, deep learning, natural language processing, informational retrieval.
· Proven track record of leading and mentoring applied scientists.
· Computer Science fundamentals in object-oriented design, data structures, algorithm design, problem solving, and complexity analysis.
· Proficiency in, at least, one modern programming language such as C, C++, Java, or Python.
· Ability to take a complex problem from scoping requirements through actual launch of the project.
· Excellent written and oral communication skills.



Preferred Qualifications

· Experience in advertising, website optimization, recommender systems.
· Experience with distributed machine learning systems with billions of data points.
· 10+ years of hands-on experience in predictive modeling and analysis.
· Significant peer reviewed scientific contributions in premier journals and conferences.
· Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and management to collect requirements, describe software product features, and technical designs.
·Significant peer reviewed scientific contributions in premier journals and conferences.
·Proven track record leading, mentoring, and growing teams of scientists.
