Machine Learning Scientist III

As a machine learning scientist at Expedia Group, you’ll be our valiant defender, armed with cutting-edge AI weaponry. Your mission? To thwart fraudsters’ every move, detect their cunning schemes, and keep our travelers safe and secure. From credit card capers to supplier impersonations, you’ll be the guardian of trust, ensuring secure journeys for millions of travelers worldwide.

The Fraud & Risk team plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the company’s finances, thwarting billions of dollars in fraudulent attacks annually. Our efforts extend beyond financial security—we effectively combat various threats, including phishing attacks, counterfeit vacation rental schemes, improper payment diversions, and unauthorized access to personal and payment card information. By ensuring a secure environment, the team fosters trust among travelers and providers, making Expedia’s sustained revenue growth possible.

What you’ll do:

Machine Learning Engineering:

  • You will write code that is clean, maintainable, optimized, modular with good naming conventions and in a way that enables efficient and accurate translation into a data pipeline

Machine Learning:

  • You will apply an understanding of supervised and unsupervised machine learning theory.

  • You will tackle business problems by applying fundamental machine learning models, algorithms and techniques using standard libraries.

  • You will modify/adapt to models and techniques to suit business needs.

  • You will independently conduct proper model performance evaluation without help

Statistics:

  • You will apply a range of common statistical methods to solve business problems

  • You will consider underlying assumptions to pick the ideal method for problem solving

Model Design:

  • You will build end-to-end design of one step models based on detailed understanding of business requirements, including approach, choice of algorithm and data sources

  • You will seek relevant academic papers and experience to point out strengths and weaknesses of current models and recommends more sophisticated designs when needed

  • You will select valid approaches, appropriate in terms of level of effort, favoring iterative delivery that solves for the objective, not the ask (i.e., not just order-taking). Use advanced and sophisticated understanding of the business problem space to inform the design of the solution

Visualization:

  • You will apply data visualization principles consistently resulting in clear and consistent outcomes. Build complex charts with little supervision

Communication and presentation:

  • You will communicate a compelling rationale and narrative to peers and partners

  • You will influence action and results through writing clearly in an accessible way for a wide audience. Anticipate questions, structuring presentations around a clear narrative, and is concise in what's included. Present clearly and engagingly

  • You will communicate across various levels of the organization, tailor messages to audience and filters relevant information

Stakeholder and project management:

  • You will frame challenging business problems as a data science problem and concrete set of tasks

  • You will leverage others’ skills, knowledge and expertise effectively in problem solving and delivering impact

  • You will manage stakeholders with frequent communication, expectation management, meeting deadlines and minimizing surprises

Who you are:

  • Master’s, PhD degree in a technical field; or Equivalent related professional experience

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain multiple data science project/product in production environments

  • Have significant experience in at least one major ML programming language (Python, Scala…) and familiar with others

  • Experienced in industrial application of machine learning

The total cash range for this position in Seattle is $137,500.00 to $192,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $220,000.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.

Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience.  Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
