About us:

The Dalla Lana School of Public Health is a Faculty of the University of Toronto that originated as one of the Schools of Hygiene begun by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1927. The School, which played a critical role in the COVID-19 pandemic response, went through a dramatic renaissance after the 2003 SARS crisis and it is now the largest public health school in Canada, with more than 850 faculty, 1,000 students, and research and training partnerships with institutions throughout Toronto and the world. With $76 million in research funding per year, including more than $31.5 million held at DLSPH, the School contributes to improving population health and health policy and health systems through discoveries and innovation in data science and AI, maternal, child and reproductive health, climate change [response], implementation and improvement sciences, preventable disease through vaccines and prevention through [and] wellness such as with diabetes, comparative health policy, sustainable and equitable health systems, global and Indigenous health, among many other areas.

As Research Officer, reporting to Principal Investigator Dr. Audrey Laporte, you will plan and implement research activities for a Ministry of Health (MOH)-funded health services research project involving the analysis of health system administrative data sources from across Ontario. Your strong research and analytical skills will enable you to advise on the research project design, conduct statistical analysis and contribute to project planning, including planning and estimating financial resources. You will use your strong writing skills to perform wide ranging and large-scale literature reviews and support data analyses. Your background in health administrative data, solid communication and organizational skills will enable you to contribute to advancing the overall goals and initiatives of the project.

Your responsibilities will include:

 

  • Contributing to the planning of research goals, assessing needs, selecting methods of data collection and analyses
  • Developing project schedules including milestones, critical path, timelines, deliverables and reporting and scheduling day to day project activities
  • Analyzing datasets, results and preparing statistical reports for research papers and summaries
  • Drafting and submitting documented procedures to the Research Ethics Board (REB) for approval
  • Implementing and executing qualitative and quantitative research methods including advising on research project design
  • Delivering presentations at conferences
  • Training others on research methods and directing the activities of an appointed employee

 

Essential Qualifications:

 

 

  • Master’s degree in (mental health, health economics, clinical sciences or public health) or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum five (5) years’ of relevant work experience conducting research, analyzing, interpreting and reporting on results
  • Experience leading and managing projects and priorities, including a strong understanding of the application of project management methodology
  • Experience building and maintaining positive working relationships with a range of stakeholders
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing data, interpreting findings and making recommendations for improvement based on insights and best practices
  • Demonstrated experience drafting summaries of research results, preparing written materials for knowledge translation purposes and conducting literature reviews
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods, interpretation and analysis
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing databases
  • Experience submitting Research Ethics Boards applications
  • Experience presenting at academic conferences
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
  • Advanced research and statistical analytical skills required
  • Demonstrated experience with multiple types of statistical analysis techniques, including using discrete variable analysis, regression/correlation.
  • Experience applying optimizing techniques which are commonly used in efficiency analyses and operations research as well as advanced machine learning methodologies
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communications skills (oral and written) with an ability to multi-task and prioritize competing demands
  • Ability to foster positive relationships with multiple groups
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong commitment to accuracy and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and proven ability to meet deadlines
