About the Role:

The Unite Us Insights team is seeking a Senior Director of Data Science to lead our Data Science team and to help shape and implement our data science strategy. Unite Us is the leading technology providing end to end social care solutions, a significant component of which is using our expertise on structured social care data to provide best in class social care technology solutions to our diverse customer base.   The ideal Senior Director of Data Science candidate will have a background in  data science and machine learning fundamentals and proven experience organizing and shepherding data science  teams and resources towards maximizing the discipline’s potential. The ability to guide teams of data scientists and data/machine learning engineers on model building and development, machine learning engineering (MLE), and machine learning operations (MLOps) will be critical. Leadership, drive, and the ability to turn strategy and vision into clear direction and requirements are essential qualities.

As part of the Insights team, the Senior Director of Data Science will spend significant time collaborating across Unite Us teams, including  Product, Engineering, Sales, Customer Success and Marketing. Building rapport and working collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders is a requirement. The Senior Director of Data Science should be an effective influencer, a strong communicator, and a champion for the value of data science in providing social care services.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead a team of data science and machine learning professionals with varied industry and academic backgrounds
  • Oversee the direction and organizational framework for how data science and machine learning are conducted and carried out at Unite Us
  • Translate strategy and vision into clear goals, objectives, and requirements for the data science and machine learning team members
  • Help develop and shape the strategy for data science including its application in Unite Us’ platform and products
  • Deliver end-to-end, repeatable, and scalable value by coordinating machine learning engineering (MLE) and operations (MLOps) resources and efforts 
  • Establish and sign-off on best practices and methods for model building, refreshes, deployment, and orchestration
  • Institute standards for evaluating both model performance as well as team performance along with growth path for talent
  • Partner with Product and Engineering teams to ensure smooth delivery of the data science value chain
  • Collaborate with Sales, Customer Success, and other business areas to champion, promote, and exhibit the value of data science
  • Help craft our data acquisition strategy starting from a Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) perspective and extending out to other relevant sources
  • Apply data ethics frameworks to ensure fairness and equity within day-to-day activities and overall solutions
  • Realize the potential of applying advanced analytical techniques and technologies to an underserved population

What’s Required: 

  • 10+ years experience applying data science and machine learning in industry with 5+ years managing teams
  • Proven experience in large-scale machine learning operations and teams
  • Expertise with modern programming languages (Python, R, SQL) and tools/libraries (pandas, scikit-learn, TensorFlow, etc.)
  • Robust experience with managed machine learning platforms and cloud-based solutions (AWS Sagemaker, Databricks, etc.)
  • Robust experience scaling work from R&D to a production predictive pipeline built on a modern stack.
  • Robust understanding of the statistical foundation of machine learning and experience with experiment design and causal inference. 
  • Expertise with most common data science techniques (binary classification, regression) and experience with broad range of techniques (clustering, multi-class and multi-output models, principal component analysis, time-series)
  • Track record of instilling a culture of ownership, collaboration, and results
  • Positive ‘can do’ demeanor, self-motivated, and self-directed
  • Ability to dynamically adapt to shifts in priorities, resolving contention and solving problems across teams.

Education and Experience: 

  • At least 10 years of industry experience in data science / machine learning, including at least 5 years of experience managing teams
  • Degree in a quantitative field such as statistics, computer science, math, data science. Advanced degree preferred
  • Experience working with health data, particularly social data, or in a healthcare-related field is a plus 
  • Growth company experience is a plus

Environmental Job Requirements & Working Conditions: 

  • This position is remote, U.S. based
  • The target pay range for this role is: 175,000 - 195,000
  • This position requires 10% travel
