Senior Backend Data Engineer

Senior Backend Data Engineer

We are looking for a Senior Backend Data Engineer to help build new machine learning services and products within our multi-terabyte data lake. You’ll be part of a cross-functional team that includes deep learning experts, software engineers, and officers from all branches of the military.  We also do something common in Silicon Valley tech companies but radical in the defense space: we develop and test products side-by-side with our users, including on US military bases and remote locations abroad. Our engineering culture is about empathizing with users and building software products that deliver maximum mission impact. 

As a founding member of the team your decisions today will have a large impact on the company today and into the future. You are innovative: willing to take risks, think critically about novel solutions, and advocate for your ideas while seeking feedback and collaboration. You will be making trade-offs as you work to ensure that our systems are prepared to scale — being able to effectively communicate these trade-offs with your teammates is a must. 

What You’ll Do 

• Work with development teams and product managers to ideate user experience, product and software solutions 
• Build ETL pipelines to load data in/out of ML systems 
• Write effective APIs to serve ML and LLM solutions 
• Develop and manage well-functioning databases and applications 
• Write technical documentation 

Qualifications

• 4+ years as a Backend, ML Infra, or MLOps Engineer or similar role 
• Experience with Python 
• Experience with Kubernetes 
• Experience working with ML services 
• Experience with Spark or any large-scale data processing engine 
• Familiarity with relational databases and data warehousing solutions 
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills 

Nice to haves 

• Experience with AWS or similar 
• Experience with Dagster 
• Experience with MLFlow 
• Experience with Ray 
• Experience with OpenSearch or Elasticsearch 
• Experience with Docker 
• Experience with FastAPI 
• Experience with Temporal

Compensation
The salary range for this position is $150,000 - $215,000 + equity + 401K match.
