Applied Machine Learning Engineer

The Cohere platform provides access to Large Language Models through its APIs that read billions of web pages and learn to understand the meaning, sentiment, and intent of the words we use in a richness never seen before. 
We recently raised our Series B, signed a multi-year partnership with Google Cloud, and we are focused on bringing our technology to market. We will partner with customers so they can build natural language understanding and generation into their products with just a few lines of code.

And we have the technical chops to back it up - Cohere’s CEO, Aidan Gomez, is a co-author of the groundbreaking paper “Attention is all you need”, (over 23k citations) and was previously part of Google Brain. We are forming a team focused on building new applications that utilize our core large language models (LLM). This team will work on projects from conception through to productization. Team members will be involved in direct interaction with customers to fully understand their needs and devise a plan to provide solutions (to those needs) using the Cohere API. These proof of concept projects will be productized into general solutions available to all customers. Completing these end-to-end projects will involve close collaboration with a number of other related engineering teams working on multiple components of our stack.
We are looking for candidates at all levels of experience, from new grads to experienced Machine Learning Engineers. This is a brand new team to Cohere, with an opportunity to have a direct impact on the next stage of our growth.

As an Applied Machine Learning Engineer, you will:

• Engage with enterprise customers to understand their needs
• Develop solutions for customers using cohere’s API
• Contribute in expanding the endpoints and features of our API
• Function as an internal customer by heavily using cohere’s API and helping to shape and improve it
• Collaborate closely with experienced Software and Machine Learning Engineers, and other experts
• Ensure that we are building the most useful NLP platform around.

You may be a good fit if:

• You have experience building industry-specific NLP solutions using LLMs (e.g. text classification, semantic search)
• You have an understanding of transformer-based network architecture and functionality
• You are proficient in Python and at least one popular deep learning framework (TensorFlow, PyTorch, or JAX)
• You have experience with managing datasets for DL model training and fine-tuning
• You enjoy helping bring a solution from the proof of concept stage all the way to general productization
• You have strong analytical skills and can formulate a logical approach to problem-solving and planning your work
• You have excellent documentation and communication skills, and can seamlessly toggle between leading conversations with customers and getting into the technical weeds with the internal engineering team
