The Position:

We are seeking an experienced and driven data engineer who shares our vision of data as a strategic asset in enabling cutting-edge research. In this role you will design and develop cloud-based solutions to advance our goals by ensuring that the data that drives our science is Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. The ideal candidate will have a background working with life science organizations, experience with a variety of scientific data types, and expertise in cloud computing. It’s also essential to be a strong data modeler and coder, with an exceptional ability to deliver near-term value while helping companies plan for the future.

The successful candidate will act as the glue between wet and dry labs within the company, ensuring that digital solutions meet the needs of bench scientists, computational/data/ML scientists and senior management while aligning with long term strategic objectives. As an early member of a privately held, well-funded, early-stage platform biotechnology company, you will have an opportunity to contribute to building our digital strategy and have significant influence on technology platform development, with many options to apply your skills and talent as the company continues to expand.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain process maps of all the ways data accumulates and flows into and throughout the company
  • Create automated pipelines for various workloads, including raw instrument data processing, computational workflows, and information reporting
  • Organize and manage all structured and unstructured scientific data used by the company
  • Design data models for entities, assays, and results from scientific experiments and analyses
  • Drive consensus and implement standards around scientific research metadata
  • Implement scalable, cloud-based solutions to support dramatic increases in data and analysis demands
  • Integrate data and metadata from a variety of internal and external sources
  • Deliver data products and visualizations to stakeholders
  • Establish engineering standards around languages, DevOps and Agile project management
  • Assist in the management and administration of our AWS environment

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • MS degree (or BS with equivalent experience) in Bioinformatics, Informatics, Computer Science, Data Science or other related discipline
  • 3+ years’ experience in data engineering/research informatics in the life sciences
  • Demonstrated proficiency with cloud development (AWS strongly preferred) using infrastructure-as-code frameworks
  • Proficiency in with modeling and using data stored in relational and NoSQL databases
  • Experience integrating multi-omic datasets
  • Experience building processes supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependency, and workload management
  • Strong DevOps, project management and organization skills
  • A people person with an exceptional ability to collaborate with scientists of different backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with workflow orchestration software (Nextflow, SnakeMake, etc) and deploying it in cloud environments such as AWS Batch
  • Experience with ELN/LIMS (Benchling preferred)
  • Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment
