The team/department  

The Data Strategy & Services department drives the FCA’s Data Strategy by enhancing the value of data through data management, governance and analysis activities and providing central co-ordination of all data-related activities. As part of the Data, Technology & Innovation (DTI) Division, we are leading the FCA in harnessing the power of data and advanced analytics to transform financial regulation.

What you will be doing (the role)  

We are recruiting 2 Data Engineers to work in the Data Discovery and Research Team (DDR) which is part of the Data Strategy & Services department.

The department brings together skills in data management, engineering, service, and product design to deliver the FCA's Data Strategy. We work widely across the FCA to ensure the data and intelligence we acquire can be shared and used across the organisation while also reducing the reporting burden on firms.

You will contribute to team efforts to address business challenges by facilitating the effective and innovative use of data.

One of the roles will focus on the delivery of a new data collection for consumer credit agreements which will be a huge and complex new data set which needs to be transformed and integrated with other data sets in order to structure the data so that it meets the analytical needs of the organisation. The skills and experience you will have  

Minimum   

We are a signatory to the Government’s Disability Confident scheme. This means that we will offer an interview to disabled candidates entering under the scheme, who best meet the minimum criteria for a role.  

  • Proven experience in designing, documenting and deploying data flows to connect operational systems, data for analytics and business intelligence (BI) systems

  • Demonstrable evidence in developing extract, transform, load (ETL) processes with solid programming/database programming knowledge, specifically Python and SQL 

  • Experience of working with a range of stakeholders both internal and external

Essential  

  • Data development process - Design, build, test and deploy data products based on feeds from multiple systems, using a range of different storage technologies and access methods

  • Data integration design – Deliver data solutions in accordance with agreed standards to ensure services are resilient, scalable and future proof

  • Programming and build (data engineering) - Design, code, test, correct and document programs or scripts under the direction of others

  • Resolve Data Quality issues - Explain and resolve (cleanse) the types of data quality issues in databases, data processes, data products and services, ensuring the data is fit for purpose

  • Effective communication with data practitioners - Communicate effectively with analysts and data scientists to understand and articulate their data engineering requirements

  • Data modelling - Contribute to the development of data models

  • Document metadata - Document / capture metadata to agreed standards to enable it to be held in repositories
