Biotechnology is rewriting life as we know it, from the medicines we take, to the crops we grow, the materials we wear, and the household goods that we rely on every day. But moving at the new speed of science requires better technology.

Benchling’s mission is to unlock the power of biotechnology. The world’s most innovative biotech companies use Benchling’s R&D Cloud to power the development of breakthrough products and accelerate time to milestone and market.

Come help us bring modern software to modern science.

ROLE OVERVIEW

We're looking for Machine Learning interns to join our Summer 2023 intern class in San Francisco (Benchling HQ). As an intern, you'll be entrusted with a significant degree of ownership to work on either platform and infrastructure or product and application teams. You'll learn to design complex and highly scalable products and systems that will directly impact our customers or other Benchlings! Our past ML interns have worked on building tools for outlier detection, exploring Bayesian Optimization use cases in biology, and quantifying model uncertainty in our flagship Machine Learning product.

YOUR IMPACT

  • You will work with and learn from a strong team of scientists and engineers coming from industry leaders. We grow our interns through mentorship and ownership.
  • You will own a project end-to-end, from initial design, to prototype, to large-scale rollout. You might:
    • Research and prototype a way for lab scientists to analyze results using computer vision instead of human review
    • Improve the way we detect and act on outliers in data that Benchling users upload to our systems
    • Build a system to do guided physical experimentation using state-of-the-art optimization algorithms

ABOUT YOU

Must haves:

  • Current enrollment in a PhD program in a science, statistics, mathematics, or a related technical field, with an expected graduation date between December 2023 - July 2024.
  • Prior experience with software engineering via previous work experience, internships, or coursework.
  • Strong abilities in working both independently on research and as part of a team to build a more complex product.
  • A desire to have ownership over building key pieces of product and/or platform.

Nice to haves:

  • Passion about learning about life science.
