WHOOP is an advanced health and fitness wearable, on a mission to unlock human performance. WHOOP empowers its members to improve their health and perform at a higher level through a deeper understanding of their bodies and daily lives. It’s popular among Navy SEALs, healthcare, Fortune 500 CEOs, and professional athletes - if you’ve been to Fenway Park you’ve likely seen our office sign overlooking the field!
As a Data Scientist on the Data Science Coaching team, you'll help develop and deploy the technology at the core of WHOOP's business. This is the production data science org, and your work will become direct product features that have immediate impacts on hundreds of thousands of people. The team’s mandate is to build ML/AI models that coach members on how their behaviors affect their body and (similar to a human coach) what lifestyle changes might better support their personal goals. This includes coaching on sleep, exercise, and many different behaviors. Your collaborators will include physiology experts, data scientists, and software engineers. We are looking for a skilled ML modeler who is truly passionate about using data science as a product feature that makes a difference to peoples’ health, wellness, and performance.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop statistical and machine learning models on large datasets to build member-facing production features
  • Research a specific health, physiological, or fitness problem and apply latest advances in causal inference (particularly on time series data)
  • Collaborate with data and software engineers to productize models and algorithms as appropriate, and monitor model performance in the field
  • Work with MLOps engineers to stand up backend APIs that call trained production ML models
  • Collaborate with the product team to ensure we’re delivering maximal member-value
  • Reports to the Data Science - Coaching Technical Lead

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field. Master’s preferred.
  • 5+ years experience applying advanced statistical and data science techniques
  • Strong Python (including OOP), and SQL
  • Understanding of frequentist and Bayesian statistics
  • Experience applying causal inference techniques
  • Experience in neural networks, particularly LSTM, is preferred
  • Proficiency in optimization and machine learning
  • Proficiency in data visualization
  • Ability to formulate hypotheses, draw conclusions and deliver results
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to present findings to stakeholders and communicate results to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Please mention if you have experience in human physiology, exercise physiology or athletic experience!
  • Please mention if you’ve had experience working in FDA regulated environments!
WHOOP is an Equal Opportunity Employer and participates in E-verify to determine employment eligibility
This role is based in the WHOOP office located in Boston, MA. The successful candidate must be prepared to relocate if necessary to work out of the Boston, MA office.
