Nothing gets your heart racing and fingers typing quite like the challenge of a new pile of data and a problem you feel in your bones can be solved with data science. You've built up an impressive repertoire of tools and techniques from various statistical methods to NLP, decision trees, and more... and you love nothing more than finding (or adapting) the right tool for the problem at hand. Research is rewarding, but you get the most energy from seeing a project all the way through and seeing the positive impact it has on others.

Does this sound like you? Great!

We’re looking for someone who wants to use data science to help solve business challenges for a variety of teams at Expel. By working across the company to understand areas where data science is needed, you'll help teams develop the right metrics to track status and efficiency gains, and build machine learning models that find evil in our customers’ environments.

Our team values collaboration and a “how can I help?” attitude. So, if you're someone who cares about making data science accessible and understandable to everyone, and finds mentorship exciting, we should talk!

What Expel Can Do For You

  • Provide opportunities where the decisions you make have a direct impact on our company and our customers
  • Empower you to scale yourself by teaching others what responsible, non-hyped machine learning is and how it can make an impact
  • Challenge you to push the boundaries of our data science, security, and technology vision
  • Provide an entertaining, small and highly transparent startup environment

What You Can Do For Expel

  • Bring others along with you on your journey by ensuring stakeholders (internal & external) understand the what, why and how of your research (including successes & failures)
  • Work across our operations, engineering and service delivery teams, ensuring Expel can easily deploy, monitor, and manage all of our machine learning capabilities
  • Foster an atmosphere of experimentation, continuous learning, and improvement.
  • Stay aware of emerging techniques, algorithms and papers that might benefit Expel
  • Contribute to an environment of mentorship and coaching of data science and data analysis methods
  • Lead projects that run the full research lifecycle from conceptualization to deployment and maintenance

What You Should Bring With You

  • Ability and desire to collaborate and work with teams throughout the organization to foster research and innovation
  • Ability to communicate technical data science concepts to a variety of audiences, especially non data science experts
  • Passion for finding order and meaning in large, chaotic data sets
  • Experience with Python and Jupyter notebooks
  • Experience with SQL is a plus
  • Knowledge of statistics (distributions, hypothesis testing, probability, etc.)
  • 4+ years of data science experience creating models, analyzing data and drawing conclusions, recommending next steps, and summarizing key results to stakeholders
  • As an expert you can discern when it is appropriate to use the latest and greatest complex models and when it's best to use something a bit more simple
  • Experience with basic data science and visualization frameworks such as scikit-learn, plotly, pandas, and numpy
  • Familiarity with data engineering concepts and technologies
