Position Overview and Responsibilities 

We are looking for an exceptional leader and a data engineering technologist to lead the Data Engineering team within our Data and Analytics group. At Metropolis, we are building the next-gen end-to-end data systems including Data Ingestion, Data Warehousing, Data Integration, Analytic Data Products and Machine Learning capabilities. As the Director of the Data Engineering team, you will own and lead the effort to build the best-in-class data engineering platforms. You will provide both, tactical and strategic leadership and ensure adherence to data architecture and engineering best practices and standards. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Build, operationalize, maintain and support the data engineering platform and infrastructure.
  • Provide hands-on leadership and mentoring in the areas of data engineering including data ingestion pipelines, ETL/ELT, data models, data quality, data security and data privacy.
  • Build, manage and mentor a talented team of data engineers including career development
  • Implement Agile Scrum processes, ceremonies and metrics 
  • Support evaluation and selection of data tools and technologies
  • Partner with vendor teams for successful execution of engagements
  • Partner with Engineering and Applications teams to build a strong understanding of source systems
  • Partner with Analytics, Data Science and Product teams to provide data solutions for dashboards, ML-models and external customer-facing data products

 

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline or related field
  • 12+ years of relevant hands-on experience in data and analytics domain / teams.
  • Expert level proficiency in SQL
  • 5+ years leadership experience in leading data engineering teams
  • 7+ years of experience as a hands-on senior, principal, solutions data engineer before transitioning to managing teams
  • Demonstrated expertise in the areas of Data Warehouse architecture, relational and dimensional data models, data ingestion (batch, streaming, API, etc.), data integration (ETL/ELT) and data quality frameworks
  • 3+ years experience working with cloud data warehouses such as Snowflake, AWS Redshift, Azure, BigQuery or similar.
  • 3+ programming experience developing data solutions in Python, Java, Scala or similar
  • 3+ years Agile / Scrum experience including participating in daily sprints, backlog grooming and program increments 
  • Very strong project management skills. Identify implementation roadblocks, process improvements, release management improvements and other tactics to ensure timely delivery of features, while maintaining high quality.
  • Ability to earn the respect of the development team and a passion for creating a learning-based organization to invest in the team and to oversee the professional development of the team members. 
  • Ability to communicate across all levels of the organization and work with diverse project teams.
