Novartis' Biomedical Research division is our Innovation engine. We have bold objectives to transform the lives of millions of people living with diseases and conditions and unmet medical needs. Applications are invited for a highly motivated Research Scientist to conduct cutting-edge purification and separation work within the Global Discovery Chemistry group, supporting our drug discovery projects. The position is based in Basel, Switzerland. The ideal candidate should have a passion for applying chromatographic methods to purify chemical substances as part of the Separations team, working within a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary environment. The Separation team maintains expertise in applying SFC (Supercritical Fluid Chromatography) and HPLC (high-Performance Liquid Chromatography) methods to provide innovative solutions for challenging problems in drug discovery at our state-of-the-art facilities in Basel. We collaborate with research groups within Biomedical Research and across sites to comprehensively purify and characterize molecules ranging from traditional small molecules to peptides/macrocylics/RLTs and oligonucleotides.


 

Job Description

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

We are seeking an enthusiastic graduate who demonstrates knowledge in chromatography techniques and ideally previous experience in analytical chiral and achiral method development and purification processes. The candidate’s primary responsibility will be to support medicinal chemistry across a wide variety of projects. You will work in a highly collaborative team environment, developing methods and executing preparative purifications of chiral and achiral drug discovery molecules. The candidate will be expected to be a diligent, dynamic and dedicated chromatographer who proactively communicates with our medicinal chemistry partners as well as analytical chemistry colleagues.

Role requirements

What you will bring to the role:

  • Master’s / bachelor’s degree in analytical chemistry or related field or equivalent professional work experience.
  • Solid scientific knowledge in analytical methods such as HPLC/UPLC and MS. Familiarity with SFC technique would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge and experience in organic chemistry using chromatography for chemical substance purification.
  • Expertise in chromatographic data analysis, interpretation, and data management.
  • Ability to quickly learn new methods, approaches, and software as well as applying them in a consistent manner.
  • Strong attention to quality and skills to prepare work documentation according to internal standards.
  • Excellent communication skills and strong interpersonal abilities to collaborate effectively within a dynamic team.
  • Business-level/fluent English proficiency is a prerequisite.

Desirable requirements

  • Prior hands-on experience with SFC instrumentation and support of drug discovery projects in a discovery chemistry environment.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, communication, and team skills in an international cross-cultural environment, with an enthusiastic pro-active attitude.
  • Accurate and independent working style.
