About Generate Biomedicines

Generate Biomedicines is a new kind of therapeutics company – existing at the intersection of machine learning, biological engineering, and medicine – pioneering Generative Biology™ to create breakthrough medicines where novel therapeutics are computationally generated, instead of being discovered. Generate was founded in 2018 by Flagship Pioneering and has received over $420 million in funding, providing the resources to rapidly scale the organization. The Company has offices in Cambridge, Somerville, and Andover with approximately 150 employees.

The Role:

Reporting to the Head of Data and Platform Strategy, the Director of Strategy Data Sciences will serve in a crucial data science leadership position, identifying, prioritizing, and executing on high-value advanced analytics use-cases that drive Generate towards increasingly data-driven processes. (S)he will define, build, and lead a growing team of data scientists in cross-functional project teams to plan and carry out data science initiatives across the organization, and develop high-impact operational and strategic data tools.

The successful candidate will be able to identify business and technical challenges, conceptualize them as data-science problems, identify creative and agile-minded technical solutions, and quantify the impact of various opportunities to guide a strict prioritization and ensure value-accretive work. (S)he will exhibit strong management skills as well as make individual contributions and will foster a highly collaborative and integrated culture both within the Data and Platform Strategy function and across the organization. (S)he must thrive in a fast-paced, highly interdisciplinary entrepreneurial environment and have the desire to tackle large challenges. This role presents a unique opportunity to have a direct hand in building a first-of-its kind AI-driven digital biotech.

The position is Boston based.

Key responsibilities:

  • Define, build, and lead a new Strategy Data Sciences team to support data-driven thinking and decision making across all parts of Generate
  • Provide technical thought leadership and guide junior data scientists towards creative but rigorous technical solutions
  • Identify and prioritize advanced-analytics uses cases that are high-priority and high-impact, and successfully balance quick-wins with long-term value generation opportunities
  • Build data tools and machine learning models to support decision making, optimize outcomes, and analytically improve Generate’s operating model
  • Thought-partner with Generate’s ML scientists, biologists, and strategic functions to ensure a unified technical direction and bottleneck-free operation
  • Contribute meaningfully to an open, transparent, and curious company culture
  • Be an inclusive leader, effectively managing and building a diverse and multi-cultural team
  • Lead with authenticity and urgency

About You

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.A. or B.S. degree (or equivalent) in computational sciences, applied mathematics, engineering, life sciences or other relevant field linked to business analytics
  • 7+ years of professional experience, including people management OR 4+ years of management consulting experience including people management, ideally at a top-tier firm
  • Extensive Experience in value-oriented applications of analytics and machine learning for business problem solving
  • Deep technical and data science expertise
  • Strong record of professional accomplishment and leadership

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in a quantitative / scientific field (e.g. MS or PhD)
  • Experience in healthcare or life sciences technology

Skills:

  • Acute strategic and analytical skills and ability to synthesize information rapidly and effectively and deliver rigorous and accurate recommendations
  • Proven manager with the ability to lead, guide, motivate, and develop a team of high performers
  • Results-driven, high-performer with highly collaborative style
  • Highly self-motivated with demonstrated ability to multitask, manage time, handle uncertainty, and work under pressure with limited oversight
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Deep expertise in core statistical and analytical methods including
    • Experimental design and hypothesis testing (e.g. ANOVA, chi-square)
    • Dimensionality reduction (e.g. PCA)
    • Predictive modeling (e.g. regression, classification)
    • Machine learning (e.g. RF, NN)
    • Time-series analysis (e.g. ARIMA, VAR)
    • Unstructured data analytics (e.g. NLP)
    • Simulation (e.g. MC, discrete event)
    • Optimization (e.g. LP, MIP)
  • Comfortable with a broad base of data management and visualization tools (e.g. Excel, SQL, Hadoop/Spark, Snowflake, Tableau, GIS etc.)
  • Extensive experience with production-grade programming in Python
  • Experience working with real-word medical claims/EHR data (e.g. IQVIA, Optum, Truven), and / or other related data sources such as providers and health systems highly preferred
  • Experience in healthcare, biology and/or biotechnology highly preferred
