Overview:
The analyst will be responsible for performing activities related to the Department’s Data Governance team, ensuring the quality of data being reported and adherence to internal controls. This work is being performed in conjunction with Finance modernization efforts and is part of a fast paced and evolving environment. The analyst will have an opportunity to lead aspects of the overall design of data governance activities and will work across many areas of the Company and its operations, with some direct exposure to senior leadership. 

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Participate in and execute on Finance’s conformance testing over regulatory reporting, which confirms alignment between M&T data lineage (i.e., data mapping and related transformations) to Fed instructions/ FAQ documents. Specific responsibilities include :
  • Interpreting data lineage (understanding complex derivations/ transformation occurring within the various systems) and populating the necessary technical details along with a layman’s description of the code into conformance testing files 
  • Querying various data platforms to investigate discrepancies between expectations and lineage  
  • Playing a liaison role between conformance testing team members and technology for technical related questions 
  • Querying various data platforms and leveraging data lineage documentation to assess potential impact of data issues identified 
  • Assessing the development of end-to-end data lineage created by Enterprise Data & Analytics department and/or consultants to ensure alignment with Finance requirements 
  • Executing on quarterly SOX controls, specifically interface testing (including the build out of automated testing solutions) 
  • Participating in data migration projects for impact to the data validation program and data lineage. 
  • Assisting with the design of other projects as applicable and occasionally leading projects of moderate scope.  
  • May be required to make presentations to immediate managers or peers on subject matters in which they have expertise. 
  • Providing cross training/support to team members. 
  • Participating in training and development opportunities across Finance and among supported businesses. 
  • Understanding and adhering to department timelines and deliverables. 
  • Understanding and adhering to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite.  Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibilities: 
May have direct and/or indirect reports 

Education and Experience Required: 
Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 5 years’ experience OR Associate's degree and a minimum of 7 years’ experience in accounting, auditing, operations or financial institutions
Ability to work largely independently with little direction/ follow up from management 
Strong knowledge of database structure and data architecture  
In-depth knowledge of SQL  
Strong willingness to learn new tools or new ways of working for process improvement

Strong verbal and written communication skills 
Advanced problem-solving skills 
Professionally skeptical mindset  
Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and a technical, logical thought process 
Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize workloads 

Education and Experience Preferred: 
Prefer programming experience  
Prefer previous data engineering or data architecture experience  
Data engineering, data science, data architecture, information systems, or computer science), mathematics, or accounting/ auditing experience 

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $85,104.04 - $141,840.07 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
