We are recruiting a data analyst with project management and communication skills to deliver an important project that is focussed on methane emissions from the coal sector and how these are linked to global steel supply chains. Experience in or working with industry would be welcomed, especially in ESG or netzero implementation. We already have a great reputation in Australia for providing policy and data analysis on coal mine methane, as one of our key geographies within a global programme that also covers Europe and Asia.

Data can help change the world, but only when people can understand it. Your work will have real impact in shining the light on the scale and importance of coal mine methane emissions, which are currently largely overlooked within the climate and energy space. And you will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic global team within a fast growing and innovative organisation.

Australia is the fourth largest coal mine methane emitter, but very little is being done to reduce it. Methane leaking from coal mines has been ignored for many years, but tackling it is one of the most critical short term challenges to reduce global heating this decade. Methane is a potent and fast-acting greenhouse gas, which is 82.5 times more powerful than carbon dioxide over 20 years, making the task of reducing methane levels even more important in the near-term.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage an 18 month project which will analyse data (including satellite data) about emissions from Australia’s mines and how these link to international steel supply chains
  • Work closely with a satellite analyst and other data experts in Ember to understand the data and tell a story of the significance of coal mine methane nationally and in global steel supply chains
  • Build a network of partners and collaborators working closely with the steel industry
  • Work with our communications experts to write publications and reports that grab attention with the right players
  • Lead on developing a strategy for how to raise the priority of coal mine methane within the steel industry
  • Work closely with our Australia Climate Strategy Advisor to recommend how this research will play into our wider Australia and Asia coal mine methane work

Location

  • Australia (fully remote). Occasional travel may be required

Requirements

Must have:

  • Demonstrable experience managing complex projects
  • Ability to research and source emissions (or equivalent) data and curate datasets
  • Excellent written communication and experience writing reports or publications
  • Ability to verbally communicate complex messages clearly and succinctly
  • Minimum five (5) years working in relevant senior research at a think tank/ NGO or ESG in the private sector (background in the mining industry also welcomed);
  • Passion for working in the climate and energy space and an understanding of the sector and what influences policy.
  • Able to work independently and effectively in both spoken and written English, such as writing articles and reports without supervision and attending meetings with regional government officials and international bodies.
  • Passionate about reducing global greenhouse gas emissions
  • Confident working remotely with a broad range of people, from different countries and timezones.

Nice to have

  • Fascination with data and data visualisation
  • Knowledge of methane/ coal sector/ steel sector or industry background
  • Experience in climate advocacy
  • Experience engaging with government officials or industry representatives

We are especially keen to encourage applications from people underrepresented in climate change analysis and campaigning. Climate change is a race issue, a class issue, and a gender issue. We welcome applicants with lived experiences of these issues
