Protective Life Insurance Company is seeking an Associate Data Scientist to join our growing data science team.
This is a great opportunity for recent MS and PhD graduates who want to start their career in data science.
As an Associate Data Scientist, you will work with a multidisciplinary team to design and develop innovative analytical products & solutions using data science, advanced analytics, and machine learning. You will use your critical thinking and problem-solving skills to assist in developing new approaches to complex business problems. You should have the flexibility to sometimes work with ambiguity and changing business priorities.
The ideal candidate must have a solid understanding of various modeling techniques, hands-on coding experience and great communication skills where he/she can present complex technical topics in simple business language.
Note: Pursuant to Colorado law, Protective is providing the applicable salary range for Colorado residents.
Salary Range Specific to Colorado: $69,000- $100,000
Actual salaries may vary depending on factors, including but not limited to, job location, skills, and experience. The range listed is just one component of Protective’s total compensation package for employees.

Responsibilities & Essential Functions
- Collaborate with business leaders and partners to understand business needs and translate it into established business goals and measures of success.
- Under supervision, gather requirements from appropriate business partners for projects, including necessary data for analysis. Develop project plans, execute on deliverables within agreed upon timeframes, manage deadlines, communicate progress and make recommendations to address issues.
- Perform data mining on large datasets (structured and unstructured), build models and perform analysis using advanced modeling techniques.
- Under supervision, ascertain and execute plans to build, implement and maintain predictive models using available tools and programming languages.
- Present and communicate results to target audience.
- Coordinate with different functional teams to deploy algorithms and develop processes and tools to monitor model performance and data accuracy.
Job Qualifications
- Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD Degree in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science (or related fields) and a minimum of 2, 0-2 or 0-1 years of related work experience for BS, MS or PhD respectively.
- Solid understanding of unsupervised and supervised machine learning techniques, e.g., Clustering, PCA, GLMs, Tree Based Models, Linear Classifiers, etc.
- Experience in data manipulation and cleaning.
- Proficient in at least 1 programming language (Python, R, SAS, SQL, etc.) with 1-2 years of hands-on experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- MS/PhD in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science or related fields
- Relevant graduate level coursework completed in MS/PhD program
- 1-2 years of hands-on experience with machine learning algorithms (Clustering, PCA, GLMs, Tree Based Models, Linear Classifiers, etc.)
- Proficient in 2 or more programming languages (SQL, R, Python, etc.)
- Solid understanding of fundamental concepts of Generalized Linear Models
- Some experience with deep learning is a plus
- Some experience with text, image, and/or voice analytics is a plus.
