Hi, we're Oscar. We’re hiring a Senior Data Scientist, Operations Research to join our Data team.

Oscar is the first health insurance company built around a full stack technology platform and a relentless focus on serving our members. We started Oscar in 2012 to create the kind of health insurance company we would want for ourselves—one that behaves like a doctor in the family.

Oscar is restructuring health care to make it easy, affordable, and seamless for consumers to access high value care. Oscar’s data team is focused on pushing our understanding of this complex landscape. Insurance companies sit on a trove of data that is both broad and deep, spanning financial claims, clinical medical records, and rich product interaction data from our members. Connecting the dots across these datasets gives us unique insight into how the healthcare system functions and allows us to improve care coordination, better manage risk, build higher-performing provider networks, and create a standout consumer experience in our product. At Oscar, we are looking for bright and curious data minded individuals to join our team of 40+ researchers, data scientists, and analysts to leverage our efforts!

About the role:

You will identify key gaps and opportunities in the data needed to support our claims lifecycle operations and collaborate on solutions to make our claims processes more efficient and member-friendly.

You will report into a Director of Data Science. This is a hybrid role. You will work part of the time in the New York City office and part of the time work-from-home/remote. #LI-Hybrid

Responsibilities:

  • Become a Subject Matter Expert in the representation of claims information in Oscar’s data, its lifecycle, operational processes, and outcomes
  • Design, implement and manage a suite of assets (i.e. datasets, ML/algorithmic models) to simplify and clarify the underlying claims’ data for business analysts to support driving down administrative costs and optimizing the claims’ lifecycle
  • Collaborate with other data scientists on the design and implementation of novel data assets for domains that are claims-adjacent (e.g. accumulators and benefits) and/or lifecycle-related (e.g. Risk Adjustment charts)
  • Own the Operations Research roadmap and ensure that it aligns with key stakeholders’ objectives

Requirements:

  • 6+ years of relevant work experience OR a Master’s degree in a quantitative field with 4+ years of experience OR a PhD in a quantitative field with prior industry experience
  • Strong SQL and Python experience
  • Able to navigate between high level strategic thinking and granular methods of problem solving
  • Are an outside-the-box problem solver

Bonus points:

  • Knowledge of or previous work experience in health care, health economics, or health insurance
  • Previous work experience in operations research and/or inventory management
  • Experience deploying heuristic solutions to combinatorial optimization problems, for example Constraint Programming, Linear and Mixed-Integer Programming, Vehicle Routing, and/or Graph Algorithms
