The Sensors Division at STR focuses on technology development for advanced sensor systems, particularly in the areas of airborne/surface-based radar, electronic warfare, underwater acoustics, hyperspectral imaging, and EO/IR sensing. Within this role, we perform work on full system prototypes, experiment campaigns and technology component development. Particular development roles within the Sensors Division include RF analog/digital hardware, acoustic hardware, signal processing algorithms, machine learning algorithms, tracking/fusion, as well as real-time embedded processor implementation.

The Advanced Architectures and Algorithms (AAA) Group within the Sensors Division develops and delivers advanced signal processing, machine learning, tracking/fusion algorithms, novel RF sensing technologies, next-generation resource management architectures, modeling, simulation, and analysis tools in support of cutting-edge sensor research and development programs.

The AAA Group is seeking a PhD-level RF-systems engineer to research, design, develop and implement capabilities for future multi-function sensor systems. You will collaborate with fellow researchers and engineers on multi-disciplinary teams spread across multiple STR campuses, groups, divisions, and with industry partners to understand customer objectives and develop innovative solutions to complex and challenging national security problems. Your areas of specific focus will include exploration of advanced sensing concepts, radar, communications, EW/RF convergence, radar signal processing, and advanced sensor concept demonstration.

A successful candidate should have a relevant background in translating algorithms from the professional literature into software, with consideration for performance, portability, and supportability issues relevant to interpreted, compiled, and embedded software. This position requires competency in RF systems, statistical signal processing, team-based problem solving, software development, radar, communications, optimization, and a strong self-motivated work ethic.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Developing system concepts, algorithms, and RF solutions to remote sensing challenges
  • Working as part of a small, focused team to architect, develop, implement, and test real-time applications featuring open architecture software principles
  • Technical leadership, equipping, and oversite of algorithm implementation and testing
  • Modeling and Simulation of advanced RF systems, new sensing paradigms, and multi-function RF concepts

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to obtain and retain a Security Clearance
  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or related field
  • Strong background in RF systems, i.e., Radar, Communications, and Electronic Warfare
  • Programming experience, especially with open architecture software projects
  • Proficiency in MATLAB and/or Python as well as other higher-level languages
  • Object oriented programming skills in C/C++
  • Strong Mathematical, troubleshooting, writing, and verbal communication skills

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active Security Clearance at the Secret or Top Secret (TS) level
  • Experience with advanced RF system concepts, multi-dimensional signal processing, waveform design, system optimization, and multi-function phased array apertures
  • Experience with algorithm optimization for real time systems, especially radar or remote sensing
  • Overseeing and Implementing real-time RF systems in C/C++ and VHDL from verified algorithms written in higher-level languages.
  • Experience with FPGAs, Verilog/VHDL, CUDA, and laboratory RF test equipment
  • Experience using source code management (Git, Subversion)
  • Software design/architecting team leadership experience
  • Experience & competency with software development tools and processes including continuous build, unit testing frameworks, static and dynamic code analysis
