The role 

Language is situated at the heart of DeepMind’s ultimate goal of solving and building Artificial General Intelligence, as language is both an example of general intelligence and an ideal interface to interact with artificial agents.

Having demonstrated a track record of pioneering research, Research Scientists join DeepMind to work collaboratively to develop solutions to fundamental questions in machine learning, natural language processing, and AI. Drawing on expertise from a variety of disciplines including deep learning, reinforcement learning, statistics, natural language processing, linguistics, cognitive science, neuroscience, safety, and multi-agent systems, our Research Scientists are at the forefront of groundbreaking research.

The Language Team seeks to build learning systems that can efficiently and robustly use, generate, and understand natural language, in a safe, fair, and understandable way. Our team develops fundamental models for language phenomena, in written, spoken, and signed forms; applies models to language tasks and applications such as translation, question answering, and dialogue; equips artificial agents with the capacity to acquire and use language in situated and multimodal environments; and interprets psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic data using our computational models to shed light on how humans process language so as to ultimately develop better artificial models of language. In addition, we formulate and use innovative ways to create language datasets to improve training and evaluation of models.

Key responsibilities:

• Design, implement, and evaluate models, agents and training algorithms for understanding, generating, and using language to solve problems.
• Report and present research findings and developments including status and results clearly and efficiently both internally and externally, verbally and in writing.
• Engage actively in team collaborations to meet research goals.
• Work with external collaborators and maintain relationships with relevant research labs and individuals.

About you

To set you up for success as a Research Scientist on this team, we look for the following skills and experience:

• PhD in a technical field or equivalent practical experience.

In addition, the following would be an advantage:

• PhD in machine learning, neuroscience, cognitive science, linguistics or computer science.
• Relevant experience to the position such as post-doctoral roles, a proven track record of publications, deep neural network architectures, or software toolkits.
• A real passion for AI!
