Director of Data Analytics

Ginkgo Bioworks
Our COVID-19 testing service, Concentric by Ginkgo, is designed to provide broader access to COVID-19 diagnostic testing solutions. We’ve built a laboratory network across the US to support high rates of testing frequency for our clients, offering an end-to-end, onsite testing service designed to test large communities of individuals. Performed at high-scale and high-throughput, this additional testing capacity will be essential for organizations, institutions, and companies to be able to reconvene their teams and reopen their communities.
We also recognize that biosecurity and public health are global problems. After the enormous impact Concentric has had - and continues to have - in the US, we are working to support COVID-19 response and make the world safe from future biosecurity and public health threats.
To help facilitate this initiative - and help drive our biosecurity work forward - we’re looking for a talented Director of Data Analytics to join our team. With your expertise, you’ll help to build, manage, and grow an internal- and external-facing data analytics function that supports both public health decision-makers as well as internal stakeholders (commercial, finance, product, etc.). You’ll collaborate with a team of talented and diverse data analysts, software engineers, product managers, designers, and, of course, our customers (internal and external). Plus, you’ll work with cutting-edge genomics and other diagnostics data in order to build innovative analytic capabilities that establish Concentric as the leader in biosecurity. Our data engineering and analysis stack includes Snowflake, Airflow, dbt, Tableau, Jupyter notebooks, and other modern SaaS and self-hosted solutions. Our engineering and computational biology teams collaborate closely with our current data analysts and principally work in Python.
Responsibilities
- Drive the scope, organization, and effectiveness of the data analysis function at Concentric
- Develop a roadmap for the data analysis function that defines ownership and responsibilities across Product, Engineering, and other functional groups (commercial, finance, etc.)
- Collaborate with Engineering to ensure data is centralized into a single data lake, adheres to a unified data model, and supports data analysis requirements across Concentric’s distinct functional groups
- Collaborate with all functions of the company to ensure data analysis needs are addressed and required data is available to both internal teams and, where appropriate, external customers
- Build, train, and retain a high performing team of data analysts to support internal and external data customers
- This position reports directly to the Head of Software and Product and will work closely with members of the leadership team to support strategy, routine data analysis needs, and special projects
Minimum Requirements
- BS or MS degree in data science, applied mathematics, statistics, or another quantitative field OR equivalent work experience
- 7+ years of experience in Data Analytics, including at least 2 years of management experience
Preferred Capabilities and Experience
- Strong working proficiency in SQL, one or more data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Looker), and programming experience (Python, R)
- Track record of building, training, and retaining high performance data analyst team(s)
- Excellent organizational and communication skills, including experience working with and prioritizing projects across diverse sets of internal and external stakeholders
- Familiarity with diagnostics, genomics, synthetic biology, or a related domain a plus but not required
- Experience developing, validating, and productionizing statistical or machine learning models is an additional plus

We also feel that it’s important to point out the obvious here – there’s a serious lack of diversity in our industry, and that needs to change. Our goal is to help drive that change. Ginkgo is deeply committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all of its practices, especially when it comes to growing our team. Our culture promotes inclusion and embraces how rewarding it is to work with people from all walks of life.
We’re developing a powerful biological engineering platform, so we must remain mindful of the many ways our technology can – and will – impact people around the world. We care about how our platform is used, and having a diverse team to build it gives us the best chance that it’s something we’ll be proud of as it continues to grow. Therefore, it’s critical that we incorporate the diverse voices and visions of all those who play a role in the future of biology.
It is the policy of Ginkgo Bioworks to provide equal employment opportunities to all employees and employment applicants.
