As part of our engineering team, you’ll be responsible for building large-scale data management and analytics platforms. We use a variety of tools, making sure we use the right one for the job at hand.

As a close-working and collaborative team, we make data valuable and available to our clients, through consultancy services or product development.

At the Data Shed, we've been working with some truly inspiring clients on anything from real-time data integration and data mining, business-wide Single View of Customer systems to our own SaaS product.

We face new and exciting challenges every day, from ensuring high availability and performance of critical government systems, to understanding and improving complex banking and finance data structures.

Summary of Position

The Principal Engineer is a key role within our Engineering function. The role is responsible for leading an adaptable, multi-skilled squad in technical direction – technical mentoring, setting and monitoring objectives, and leadership in technical delivery, strategic planning and architectural design.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a broad knowledge of the technology landscape helping The Data Shed maintain market-leading tools and technology;
  • Champion Infrastructure-as-code and automation in every aspect of the solution, encouraging a platform agnostic approach;
  • Be prepared to operate in a hands-on development environment, working with several different platforms, languages and frameworks;
  • Lead definition and maintenance of best practise and standards in architecture, development, testing and support;
  • Share knowledge gained through consultancy and product development with the wider community, via the Data Shed’s blog and through community and company events;
  • Manage and monitor the skills and availability of your team to ensure they are able to deliver to commitments;
  • Ensure that all platforms are delivered in a secure, supportable and scalable manner and are documented appropriately;
  • Work closely with the Engineering leadership team to ensure a consistent approach across all teams.

Skill & Experience

  • Solid understanding of IaaS and PaaS on at least one Cloud provider and develop knowledge of the other key Cloud providers;
  • Highly-scalable data processing platform design and implementation experience;
  • Experience building end to end solutions that includes data centric applications with suitable supporting tools and consuming channels (e.g. web, mobile, native).
  • Solid scripting skills in one of PowerShell, Bash/Shell and Python or another appropriate language;
  • Experience of moving in a fast-paced, agile environment;
  • Experience of responding to aggressive, delivery-focussed objectives.
