Boclips has big ambitions. We’ve built an AI-led product that is transforming the discoverability of multimedia content for education. Digital media such as videos and podcasts are critical in the online delivery of learning experiences to engage students and improve outcomes - but in order for those assets to provide value, they need to find their right place within the different learning curricula. That's where our data science team come in!

We are looking for a Lead Data scientist to inspire, lead and grow our data science team.


About the role:

  • Reporting to our VP of Product Development, you will help define the roadmap and priorities for the Data Science Team in alignment with the company strategy.
  • Articulate the strategic and commercial value of our data science function, ensuring data science IP is developed and protected
  • Drive innovation through advanced data science expertise and latest technologies to deliver solutions for the benefit of our clients and business
  • Translate unstructured, complex business problems into the appropriate data problem, model and analytical solutions
  • Hiring, supporting and coaching new team members. Ensuring they are thriving in their role within the team
  • Drive and encourage team-wide diffusion of knowledge and being a source of analytical and data science best practices
  • Supporting the careers of our Data Scientists through pro-active coaching, mentoring and regular 1-2-1s
  • Be passionate about furthering our competitive advantage in data science by leading new R&D into our data science methods and technology stack and empower the team to develop their capabilities
  • Be an advocate for integrity and trust in all outputs from the team with an unwavering commitment to "doing the right thing"
  • Build strong relationships and trusted partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders (internal and external)
  • Oversee our data infrastructure and pipelines, ensuring scalability, consistency and stability is maintained

Requirements

  • We believe in hiring for data science aptitude over niche or deeply technical skills.
  • You can communicate clearly to all audiences, including non-technical team members and external partners.
  • You advocate for writing high-quality code and leaving things in a better state than you found them.
  • You’re a well-rounded data scientist who likes to understand the business context and anything else that might impact the product.


Must have:

  • 3+ years experience working in a data role
  • Experience managing/developing a team of data scientists and engineers (can be minimal if looking for a first lead job - but must want this)
  • Clear and concise communicator and able to unpick complex technical and commercial problems
  • Able to build trust inside and outside the team
  • Cultivating a team environment which is innovative, motivational, highly-productive and setup for rapid change
  • A strong data science background including solid coding skills, ideally including Python
  • Knowledge of building DS solutions end to end, from discovery to production and maintenance
  • Able to lead sophisticated research projects
  • Skilled in collaboration both within and between teams/departments
  • Good knowledge of traditional ML techniques including recommender systems and deep learning


Nice to have:

  • Experience in a startup or fast-paced environment

  • Target base salary £90,000+ or location equivalent (with some flex dependant on experience)
