About the Role

We are looking for a  Data Science Lead/Manager to join the Data & Analytics team at Cockroach Labs. As a member of the data organization, You will work closely with our Product and Engineering teams to uncover insights about how customers use CockroachDB, helping to inform the Product’s decision-making and focus Engineering efforts. You will also work on long-running analytical initiatives marked by greater complexity and less structure that will yield substantial product enhancements. We’re looking for someone who’s comfortable working on interesting growth, engagement, and retention-related problems in the SaaS space using cutting-edge and proven techniques. This is a strategic, high-impact role that will help shape the future of CockroachDB products and services.

You Will

• Apply various data science methods to understand the usage patterns of developers and builders who use CockroachDB
• Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets to develop a thorough understanding of CockroachDB products, users, and acquisition channels
• Run the exploratory analysis to uncover new areas of opportunity, generate hypotheses, and quickly assess the potential upside of a given opportunity
• Sleuth through large amounts of data to uncover feature-usage patterns, subtle issues with the system, potential performance enhancements, and areas to improve user experience.
• Work closely with marketing, design, product, support, and engineering to anticipate analytics needs and quantify the impact of existing features, future product changes, and marketing campaigns
• Monitor, optimize, and report on marketing and growth metrics and split-test results. Make recommendations based on analytics and test findings
• Organize disparate facts and analyses into a coherent narrative that evaluates the success of and influences product strategy
• Perform evidence-based evaluations of the most important drivers of increased adoption of the CockroachDB capabilities
• Prototype foundational data pipelines and partner with the data engineering organization to elevate these into canonical sources of truth for CockroachDB  metrics
• Identify and clearly communicate potential opportunities to improve the experience of users who want to build apps with CockroachDB

The Expectations

In your first month, you will go through the Cockroach Labs onboarding process and start to build relationships with stakeholders across the company. You will understand our current data architecture and the internal and external resources we use to maintain it. You will start to prioritize the current backlog of data requests.

After 30 days, you will have a grasp on the major questions the product management team needs to answer, as well as the executive-level questions that require coordination between disparate data sets. You will update the roadmap priority and put in place key processes for building out this function. You will develop a point of view on the direction we need to take our data platform to support our product operations.

After 90 days, you will be fully integrated into the team. You will put in place the major processes for supporting Product and the broader organization, and make incremental improvements to our data platform that demonstrably improve our ability to make decisions. You will socialize a strategy for data in the Product team and how this will support the needs of other departments in the future.

You Have

• 8+ years of data science, machine learning, and advanced analytics experience in high velocity, high-growth companies
• 6+ years experience in Marketing and Growth Analytics or a related field in SaaS or consumer companies
• Familiarity with product data science - understanding and tracking customer and user behavior using lenses like adoption, churn, cohorts and funnel analysis.
• Experience collaborating with and understanding the needs of stakeholders from a variety of business functions. 
• Strong coding skills in general-purpose languages like Scala or Python, and familiarity with software engineering principles around testing, code reviews, and deployment.
• Extensive experience in applying Data Science / ML in production to build data-driven products using experimentation, A/B testing, statistical methods such as regression and hypothesis testing, statistical analysis, and quantitative modeling
• Proficient in data analysis and visualization using tools like R and Python.
• Experience with distributed data processing systems like Spark, and proficiency in SQL.
• MS or Ph.D. in quantitative fields (e.g., Statistics, Math, Computer Science, Physics, Economics, Operational

Veera Ilamurugu heads up the Data Analytics team at Cockroach Labs. He is responsible for our Product data strategy and is passionate about building and scaling businesses with data. Before joining Cockroach Labs, Veera was a Head of Analytics at Stitchfix, Leading an analytics team covering internal company strategy  When not at work, he enjoys watching Netflix, trying out new recipes in the kitchen, and listening to music.
