Job summary
Join a team working on building next generation technology to redefine how users will interface with machines and abundance of text documents in our daily lives. We are a team of highly motivated individuals focused on enabling our customers to benefit from the next generation of NLP offerings.

Amazon Comprehend is a natural-language processing (NLP) service that uses machine learning to uncover valuable insights and connections in text. As the Software Development Manager of this team, you will be responsible for leading a team of strong engineers, and continuing to develop them. You will need to constantly challenge the boundaries of natural language understanding. You will draw from deep and broad technical expertise to mentor engineers and provide leadership on complex technical issues. You will manage some of our most strategic technical projects, deliver large scalable systems, design new software systems at the cutting edge of machine learning technology, and have a significant bottom-line impact on our business and competitive position.

You should have a passion for delivery, drive for excellence, and penchant for quality. You will practice development management practices such as scrum and make sure your team is productive solving technical challenges in system design, distributed computing, and full-stack services.

Key job responsibilities
We'll be looking at you to help:
  • Work on the service roadmap with other stake holders.
  • Decide what features to build and performance improvements to prioritize.
  • Drive software engineering best practices.
  • Provide technical leadership for software development and documentation, making sure designs meet requirements, and delivering high quality software on tight schedules.

Basic Qualifications


  • 7+ years of experience working directly within engineering teams
  • Experience partnering with product OR program management teams
  • 3+ years of people management experience, managing engineers
  • 3+ years of experience architecting and designing (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science
  • Experience with NLP and deep learning systems
