Location: Calgary,Alberta,Canada

Purpose of the position

Reporting to the Manager, Analytics, you will be a key contributor in the implementation and upkeep of SMART’s data pipeline. From automating quality data ingestion at the data sources, through ensuring the visibility and availability of the data within SMART’s data platform, to its final consumption by internal and external consumers, your skills will be leveraged to ensure the quality of the data with the complexity abstracted from end user view.

Responsibilities and accountabilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain a high-performance data pipeline
  • Build and maintain the data interfaces between SMART’s systems and SMART’s data platform
  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements through the automation of manual processes and the optimization of existing infrastructure
  • Ensure the uptime of the data platform and perform root cause analysis and the related corrections when issues occur
  • Demonstrate strong business-acumen in the recommendations relating to process automation and data cleaning
  • Inspire the adoption of advanced data science and analytics use across SMART
  • Contribute to the consistent technical growth and development of the Data Science and Operations organization, ensuring the awareness of state-of-the-art architectures, best practices, and tools as they evolve
  • Build effective working relationships across all data producers and consumers at SMART
  • Support the development of prototype additions to the data pipeline
  • Scope data engineering work requests and deliver on the agreed timelines
  • Create schedule mitigation options when unexpected issues arise
  • Other duties as required

Education and work experience

  • Master’s Degree in data science, computer science, or another quantitative field
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in Data Engineering role
  • Registered or eligible to be registered with APEGA would be an asset
  • Applied knowledge of software development best practices with experience using various data related querying, application programming, and data science related programming languages (SQL, MongoDB, Python, R, Scala)
  • Implementation experience in high availability data pipelines involving streaming transformations of structured and unstructured data
  • Previous design of successful data pipelines involving both relational and non-relational database access
  • Experience manipulating, processing, and enabling value extraction from large disparate datasets through programmatic means
  • Expertise in interfacing with industry standard visualization and reporting tools (PowerBI, Tableau)
  • Experience in the implementation and upkeep of data pipelines that leverage Big Data and Cloud Computing technologies (AWS, Azure, GCP, Snowflake)
  • Demonstrated skill in the proposal, evaluation, design, and implementation of data cleaning solutions ranging from simple automated scripts to graphical UI creation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong understanding of the fundamentals of data management
  • Demonstrated commitment for continuous personal growth
  • Positive can-do attitude with a passion for taking on the hardest challenges

Working conditions

  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Conferences calls outside of normal business hours will be required.

  • This position does not have direct reports
