Collectors Universe has multiple business lines that grade, authenticate, and sell millions of high-value, record-setting collectibles every quarter. We're the leader in third-party authentication and grading services for high-value collectibles including trading cards (Professional Sports Authenticator), coins (Professional Coin Grading Services), video games (Wata), event tickets, autographs, and memorabilia, and with your help we can continue to grow rapidly. Our goal is to make the joy of collecting accessible to everyone -- collectors looking to complete their set, inventors looking to maximize the value of their collection, and anyone who’s looking to preserve a game, card or coin that reminds them of fond memories in their lives. We’re looking for analytics engineers who can support us in creating the next generation of engaging products for collectors, scalable, intuitive software for our internal customers, and innovative, best in class solutions to bring delight to The Hobby. What will you help us build?

Our services span collectible coins, trading cards, video games, event tickets, autographs, and memorabilia through our subsidiaries, which include Professional Sports Authenticators (PSA), Professional Coin Grading Services (PCGS), Wata, Certified Coin Exchange (CCE), Collectors Corner, Set Registry, Collectors.com, and the Long Beach Expo collectibles trade show. Since our founding in 1986, we have graded and authenticated more than 80 million items. We employ over 1,000 people across our Santa Ana, CA headquarters, New Jersey, Hong Kong, Paris, Shanghai and Tokyo.

We’re looking for a Director of Data Engineering to lead and grow our data platform team to help us establish a robust modern data platform that services our internal and external data use cases.

This role is remote (US-based), with the option of working from one of our offices in New York, NY, Jersey City, NJ, or Santa Ana, CA.

What You’ll Do:

  • Help set the vision for our data platform and work across engineering and product teams to instill, enact, and iterate on that vision and communicate it effectively to the organization and leadership.
  • Lead the data platform team with a heavy focus on building a diverse, high-performing team of data engineers and analytics engineers.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to understand data needs across the organization and develop a roadmap that you execute against.
  • Lead the design and implementation of batch data extraction processes, data modeling, and data transformations. Since our data platform team is still small, the role will involve a fair amount of hands-on work to start with.
  • Ensure that our data pipelines are scalable, repeatable, tested, documented, and secure.

Who You Are:

  • You have 6+ years of experience as a data engineer or in a similar data-focused role, including experience with “modern data stack” type tools for data warehousing, data extraction, data transformation, and workflow orchestration.
  • You have 2+ years of experience managing, leading, and recruiting high-functioning data teams.
  • You have a proven track record of managing and prioritizing complex stakeholder needs, communication with cross-functional teams, and ability to deliver against timelines with a focus on business impact.
  • You are proficient in SQL, Python, and have a strong working knowledge of software engineering workflows and tools such as version control with git, CI/CD, and testing.
  • You have a proven ability to explore complex source data, model data for reporting and analytics needs and experience with or a strong interest in the analytical side of data, e.g. collecting requirements, defining and implementing metrics, developing dashboards.
  • You do not need to be a collector or have prior knowledge of the field - our enthusiastic team will make sure you’ll learn everything you need to know for the role!

Nice To Haves:

  • Hands-on experience with the tools we currently use in our Stack: Stitch, dbt, BigQuery, Tableau, Jupyter notebooks, or similar tools (Fivetran, Snowflake, any data visualization or BI software).
  • Practical experience implementing data testing and monitoring solutions, data documentation, lineage, and access control.
  • Experience with other areas of data beyond the classic ETL stack, such as real-time data ingestion, Big Data, or Machine Learning

Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States.
