Role and Responsibilities

The Director of Data Engineering will collaborate with internal customers, data analysts, product managers, data architects and engineers to define requirements, design solutions and build/test/deploy robust data pipeline architectures.  You will lead a global team of Data Engineers responsible for building, monitoring and continuously improving modern data pipelines using tools such as Fivetran, Talend, Python, Lambda and Snowflake.  Data is seen as both a differentiator within our existing products and services and, increasingly, the way we will innovate future products.

The Director of Data Engineering is a key role within the Enterprise Data and Business Intelligence (EDBI) organization on all aspects of engineering and supporting our modern data pipelines.  In this role you will be expected to roll up your sleeves and do the hands-on work required to ingest data sources of various variety and build the necessary layers of the data warehouse.

You will be passionate in building enterprise scale data products and delivering amazing experiences for internal stakeholders along with expert level skills acquiring, modelling, storing, analysing and presenting data.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Lead and develop a global team of data engineers
  • Build a culture of continuous learning and nimbleness to rapidly adapt to new methodologies and technologies
  • Participate and contribute to the definition of data integration strategies
  • Develop and implement a platform support and lifecycle management plan
  • Build and automate data platform infrastructure using Docker, Kubernetes, and Jenkins where applicable
  • Design, Implement and document modern ELT, ELT, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Recruit and train a team of data engineers to scale as necessary
  • Establish Data Engineering Center of Excellence to train and support Data Engineers
  • Develop and orchestrate processes to acquire and integrate data
  • Continuously deliver incremental value to delight our internal stakeholders
  • Identify, document, and champion Data Engineering best practices for Bottomline
  • Identify, design, and implement process improvements: automating manual processes, optimising data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability and elasticity

 

Required Skills: 

  • Advanced SQL skills and comfort with query engines such as Athena, PrestoDB, Snowflake, BigQuery
  • Proficiency with scripting languages (JavaScript, Python, or Ruby)
  • Comfort with Linux and Windows command line functionality
  • Exposure to multiple public cloud providers: AWS, Azure, Google Cloud
  • Knowledge of presentation tools such as ThoughtSpot, Tableau, Looker, or Power BI
  • Strong analytic skills related to working with structured and semi-structured datasets
  • Working knowledge of message queues, stream processing, and highly scalable ‘big data’ data stores
  • Solid understanding of REST APIs and OAuth2 and OpenID protocols
  • Exceptional customer relations skills to engage and service customers effectively
  • Strong organisational, multi-tasking, detail-oriented and time management skills
  • Consistently maintains a high attention to detail
  • Works independently and collaboratively to resolve problems to ensure on time delivery
  • Strong documentation skills
  • Adaptability to changing priorities, as needed
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality, professionalism, and a courteous demeanour
  • Ability to grasp all aspects of a data ecosystem
  • Address and mitigate open security and risk items in conjunction with audit, compliance, and enterprise security
  • Familiarity with a range of data management, Business Intelligence, and Data Science approaches and the latest, tools, approaches, techniques, and methodologies in data and analytics development management
  • Proven track record in meeting aggressive deadlines in an environment with shifting priorities
  • Experience with highly sensitive financial services and/or consumer data, and maintaining its security as a top priority; understanding big data and technology at scale
  • Expert knowledge of Atlassian Jira and experience with larger Atlassian tool suite

 

Essential Experience

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s or equivalent experience in Engineering, Computer Science, or relevant technical field
  • Expert knowledge and working experience in the Data Management Domain and leading data engineers or an ETL function
  • Proficient in Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) Analytical Datastores such as: Netezza, Teradata
  • Hands-on experience in Cloud technologies such as
    • AWS - S3, Glacier, EC2, Lambda, SQS, Redshift
    • Azure - ADLS, Virtual Machine, Functions, SQL Datawarehouse
    • GCP - Cloud Storage, Compute Engine, Cloud Functions, Big Query
  • Proven experience working with both cloud and on-premise DBMSs such as: Snowflake, RedShift, BigQuery, SQL Server, and Oracle
  • Skilled with structured and semi-structured data
  • Hands-on experience working with and creating RESTful web services and APIs
