The Role

As a Data Scientist in the Data Management team, you will be the founding technical contributor, responsible for setting the foundation of data engineering at BenevolentAI.

In particular, you will focus on architecting and setting best practices of a company-wide data lake to streamline data management across the organisation. You will also focus on enabling ML and data analysis use cases through data engineering.


Primary Responsibilities

  • You will work as a member of a cross-functional team comprising specialists in data engineering, data science, data governance.
  • You will work closely with data users and infrastructure teams, you will set the best practices of implementing data engineering across the organisation.
  • Embedded in data user teams, you will understand their data usage needs, and help their adoption of data engineering best practices, example projects include data lake adoption, data cataloguing, data modelling, data quality assurance, etc.
  • Setting the expectations of skills and knowledge for data engineering practitioners.
  • Provide technical assessment of 3rd party solutions of data platforms, e.g. data lake, warehouse, visualisation, etc. Give feedback to the infrastructure team on the future direction of data infrastructure.
  • Drive a culture change in data ownership.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Stay up-to-date on the latest trend in data engineering technology and methodology to identify directions for improving our platform.


We are looking for someone with

  • Experience with data tools like relational databases (Postgresql, MySQL), data warehouses (Redshift, Snowflake), distributed data processing (Spark, Hadoop), orchestration (Argo, Airflow), visualisation (Tableau, Looker), etc.
  • Experience with working with and optimising the user experience, governance, and cost of data lakes.
  • Experience building data pipelines that ingest, clean, transform, and serve data for complex data use cases.
  • Enjoy working in a fast-paced, highly-collaborative environment.
  • Strong communication skills: ability to communicate complex data science and engineering concepts to a broad audience.
  • Be visionary (think about what should be done beyond what you're doing).

Nice to haves

  • Experience working with biomedical data.
