Principal Engineer, Data & ML Platforms

We are hiring a Principal Software Engineer to work with leadership on technical vision and own the architecture on two of the largest platforms at Wayfair.   

Customer Intelligence builds the software platform that serves the largest event streaming database solution within Wayfair, often known as Scribe.  It is leveraged by many teams across Wayfair and powers activities such as Search, Recommendations, Personalization, Notifications, Machine Learning models, etc.  This stack leverages technologies including Java, GCP, Kubernetes, Python, Bigquery, etc., and tracks many interactions that our customers have across our platforms.

ML Platforms is the organization that builds the software platforms that serve our Data Scientists across Wayfair.  These platforms help build and train ML models, as well as drive automation features across the platform to data Scientists to help them get insights from the ML models they build.  

You will shape the technical roadmap for how Scribe and ML adopt more native cloud services (GCP and/or SaaS) and evolve software that differentiates Wayfair.  

What do we mean by “large”?  More than 10TB of active streaming data and well over 1B transactions weekly on Scribe.

What You'll Need:

• Extensive experience across a range of related technologies.  GCP, K8S, VertexAI for ML, Bigquery, PubSub are all used within our platforms.
• Depth in Java and Python coding.  While you will not be delivering production code on a regular basis, you will need to be able to troubleshoot deep coding issues, side by side with a less experienced engineer when they are stuck.
• Hands-on experience driving platform transformations within high-growth environments at scale.
• Experience or strong understanding of how ML models should be trained, built, deployed, and served.
• Experience with big data technologies.
• Superior organizational and analytical skills with hypothesis-driven problem solving and turning data into actionable insights.
• Ability to collaborate and influence at all levels across business and technology .
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.

This role may be fully remote in any of the US-based locations in which we can hire, or in Toronto.
