Job Summary: The Research Engineer – CAE Modelling is a key member of the Innovation & Technology (I&T) Downstream team.  This position primarily executes CAE modeling and simulations to support Hydro or customer design goals.  The ability to develop a model for a given set of conditions and evaluate the results in relation to the performance targets is a core competence.  Other tasks involve supporting or leading various projects, correlating models to physical tests, and communicating the results in a clear and concise manner.  The Research Engineer – CAE Modeling reports to the Downstream R&D Manager and will join a team mainly focused on modeling, simulation, surface treatment, advanced fabrication methods, and component testing and inspection.

 

Required Education/Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent or Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum three (3) years’ previous work experience
  • Minimum one (1) year experience with LS-DYNA

 

Preferred Skills/Qualifications: 

  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills to both internal and external customers
  • Mechanical test development, execution and analysis.
  • Ability to correlate FEA analysis with lab testing results.
  • Competence is materials performance and analysis.
  • Functional experience with Digital Image Correlation (DIC) a plus.
  • Extrusion process modeling and die performance simulation a plus.
  • Functional knowledge of fabrication methods (welding, machining, bending/forming) a plus.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Support the business area with simulation activities on structural and mechanical calculations typically within loading, bending, forming or crash evaluations.
  • Support the development of simulation material cards for nonlinear structural modeling.
  • Successfully deliver Finite Element Analysis (FEA) R&D projects that support the business area, incorporating material properties and profile design for predictive component behavior.
  • Collaborate with global FEA resources to maintain and evaluate technologies.
  • Develop, execute and analyze mechanical tests towards improving modeling accuracy.
  • Project planning and reporting, including A3 organization, progress communication, milestones and budget.
  • Coordinate local project team towards delivering on customer expectations.
  • Collaborate with Commercial team to offer customers solutions utilizing extruded profiles.
  • Proactively takes corrective actions when non-conformances arise.
  • Supports transfer and implementation of results when applicable.
  • Builds professional networks in-line with and adjacent to role and responsibilities.
  • Up to 20% travel required.
